Policy Positions

Abortion & Reproductive Issues:

Pro-choicea) Do you generally support pro-choice or pro-life legislation?
Yesb) Should abortions be illegal after the first trimester of pregnancy?
Yesc) Should abortion be legal when the pregnancy resulted from incest or rape?
Yesd) Should abortion be legal when the life of the woman is endangered?
Noe) Do you support requiring parental notification before an abortion is performed on a minor?
Nof) Do you support requiring parental consent before an abortion is performed on a minor?
Nog) Do you support the prohibition of public funds for abortion procedures?
Noh) Do you support the prohibition of public funds for organizations that perform abortions?
i) Other or expanded principles:

While I do not support parental consent or notification of parents for a minor, I do support non-religious, fact-based emotional support and counseling be available both before and after the procedure for all women, especially minors.

Budget, Spending, & Tax Issues:

1) State Spending:
Using the key, indicate what state funding levels (#1-6) you support for the following general categories. Select one level per category; you may use a number more than once.
Maintain Statusa) Education (higher)
Slightly Increaseb) Education (K-12)
Maintain Statusc) Environment
Maintain Statusd) Health care
Slightly Increasee) Law enforcement/corrections
Greatly Decreasef) Transportation/infrastructure
Maintain Statusg) Welfare
Greatly Decreaseh) Other or expanded categories:

I believe we need to reevaluate where we spend our money. We must invest in areas of education, manufacturing and small businesses in order to create jobs and grow our economy. But in order to do so, we must greatly decrease the amount of money we spend on projects which do not provide a return on our investment. We must behave prudently as a state, and spend only within our means. Connecticut families have decreased spending to live within their means, and so must our legislators.

2) State Taxes:
Using the key, indicate what state tax levels (#1-6) you support for the following general categories. Select one level per category; you may use a number more than once.
Slightly Increasea) Alcohol taxes
Slightly Increaseb) Cigarette taxes
Slightly Decreasec) Corporate taxes
Maintain Statusd) Gas/Oil taxes
Slightly Decreasee) Property taxes
Maintain Statusf) Sales taxes
Maintain Statusg) Income taxes (low-income families)
Slightly Decreaseh) Income taxes (mid-income families)
Slightly Increasei) Income taxes (high-income families)
j) Other or expanded categories:

Raising "sin taxes" can help make up for the amount we're losing in income taxes during the down economy, but we cannot raise them so much as to hurt small business. I support tax breaks for corporations, but believe we must close loopholes and mandate stricter penalties on corporations which receive government incentives to ensure they meet or exceed their goals.

3) Budget Stabilization:
Indicate which proposals you support (if any) for balancing Connecticut's budget.
Noa) Tapping into Connecticut's "rainy day" fund
Nob) Increasing tuition rates at public universities
Noc) Reducing or eliminating public worker collective bargaining
Nod) Reducing state employee salaries AND/OR pensions
Noe) Instituting mandatory furloughs AND/OR layoffs for state employees
Nof) Reducing benefits for Medicaid recipients
g) Other or expanded principles:

I do not advocate reducing current salaries, however I do believe in rate freezes (with a definite end date) during tough economic times and would entertain raising the state's retirement age to receive pensions by matching that of Social Security retirement age.

Campaign Finance & Government Reform Issues:

a) Do you support limits on the following types of contributions for state candidates?
Yes1) Individual
Yes2) Political Action Committee
Yes3) Corporate
Yes4) Political Party

Yese) Do you support the use of an independent AND/OR bipartisan commission for redistricting?
Nof) Do you support requiring a government-issued photo identification in order to vote at the polls?
g) Other or expanded principles:

Bottom line: I wholeheartedly support transparency in government.

Crime & Public Safety Issues:

Yesa) Do you support capital punishment for certain crimes?
Yesb) Do you support alternatives to incarceration for certain non-violent offenders, such as mandatory counseling or substance abuse treatment?
Yesc) Do you support decriminalizing the possession of small amounts of marijuana?
Yesd) Should a minor accused of a violent crime be prosecuted as an adult?
Noe) Should a minor who sends sexually-explicit or nude photos by cell phone face criminal charges?
Yesf) Do you support the enforcement of federal immigration laws by state and local police?
g) Other or expanded principles:

While I always support enforcement of current laws, I also support reevaluating those laws and changing them when necessary, specifically federal immigration laws.

Economic Issues:

a) Do you support reducing government regulations on the private sector?
Yesb) Do you support increased state funding for job-training programs that re-train displaced workers?
Noc) Do you support expanding access to unemployment benefits?
Yesd) Do you support providing financial incentives to the private sector for the purpose of job creation?
Noe) Do you support increased spending on infrastructure projects for the purpose of job creation?
Yesf) Do you support providing direct financial assistance to homeowners facing foreclosure?
g) Other or expanded principles:

I find it hard to answer reducing government regulations in the private sector, as it depends on the regulations. I absolutely do NOT support reducing government regulations on Equal Opportunity or Pay, but I may be inclined to look at other regulations which have a negative impact on business. Also, I do not support increased spending on infrastructure simply because to increase the amount we spent this past year on the NB/Hartford bus route would be outrageous. I'm in favor of creating short term construction jobs, but not an increase from last year's spending.

Noc) Is the tenure process for public school teachers producing effective teachers?

Nob) Do you support state funding for the development of traditional domestic energy sources (e.g. coal, natural gas, oil)?
Yesc) Do you support state funding for improvements to Connecticut's energy infrastructure?
Yesd) Do you support state funding for open space preservation?
Yese) Do you support enacting environmental regulations aimed at reducing the effects of climate change?
f) Other or expanded principles:

Gun Issues:

Yesa) Do you support restrictions on the purchase and possession of guns?
Yesb) Should background checks be required on gun sales between private citizens at gun shows?
Noc) Should citizens be allowed to carry concealed guns?
Yesd) Should a license be required for gun possession?
e) Other or expanded principles:

Health Issues:

Yesa) Do you support a universally-accessible, publicly-administered health insurance option?
Yesb) Do you support expanding access to health care through commercial health insurance reform?
c) Do you support interstate health insurance compacts?
Yesd) Do you support requiring individuals to purchase health care insurance?
Yese) Do you support monetary limits on damages that can be collected in malpractice lawsuits?
Yesf) Do you support allowing doctors to prescribe marijuana to their patients for medicinal purposes?
g) Other or expanded principles:

Social Issues:

Noa) Should marriage only be between one man and one woman?
Yesb) Should Connecticut continue to grant marriage licenses to same-sex couples?
Yesc) Do you support the inclusion of sexual orientation in Connecticut's anti-discrimination laws?
Yesd) Do you support the inclusion of gender identity in Connecticut's anti-discrimination laws?
e) Other or expanded principles:

Legislative Priorities:

In the following area, on an attached page, or via e-mail, please explain in a total of 100 words or less, your top two or three priorities if elected. If they require additional funding for implementation, please explain how you would obtain this funding.

First and foremost, we must continue the work we're doing in Education to ensure our children receive an education which prepares them for a strong Connecticut workforce. Investing in education is investing in future jobs.
Creating mandatory labeling of genetically modified foods is a major priority. GMOs are a public health threat; I will fight for consumer right to know what is in their food, and fight for a reduction in the use of pesticides in locally grown foods by working to provide incentives for growers which use natural alternatives.

Finally, Connecticut MUST reduce spending and live within its means.
