Amash quit the Republican Party last year and officially became an Independent. He was also the only House Republican to vote to convict the president in the impeachment trial.
Then, he launched an exploratory committee for the Libertarian Party’s presidential nomination and flirted with running for president in November as a third party candidate.
After suspending his presidential campaign after failing to gain any attention, Amash has announced that he will not seek re-election for his congressional seat in Michigan's 3rd District.
"I love representing our community in Congress. I always will. This is my choice, but I’m still going to miss it," Amash said in the tweet. "Thank you for your trust."
Beyond that, it is pretty clear what happened to the Never-Trump lawmaker.
Earlier this year, Amash took to Twitter and teased that he is considering running against Trump and then-presumptive Democratic nominee Joe Biden.
Last summer, Amash quit the conservative House Freedom Caucus.
Around the same time, Amash wrote an op-ed announcing that he had left the Republican Party, called on other Republican lawmakers to follow him out the door, and officially became an Independent.
"Today, I am declaring my independence and leaving the Republican Party. No matter your circumstance, I’m asking you to join me in rejecting the partisan loyalties and rhetoric that divide and dehumanize us," Amash wrote.
He added: "I’m asking you to believe that we can do better than this two-party system — and to work toward it. If we continue to take America for granted, we will lose it."
Amash does not actually mention Trump by name in the piece, but he implies on numerous occasions that the president has ruined government, is to blame for partisan politics, and is on the verge of destroying our democracy.
Amash basically blamed Trump for everything.
The Never-Trumper lawmaker went on to argue that Congress has become nothing more than a congressional body that takes orders from Trump.
“With little genuine debate on policy happening in Congress, party leaders distract and divide the public by exploiting wedge issues and waging pointless messaging wars,” he argued.
He added: "These strategies fuel mistrust and anger, leading millions of people to take to social media to express contempt for their political opponents, with the media magnifying the most extreme voices."
Again, that is simply not true.
Amash is nothing more than an establishment lawmaker who thought he could take on Trump and found out just how hard that was going to be.
He tried to launch a presidential bid to take on Trump and failed so badly that he suspended his campaign not long after he launched it.
Most will be glad to see another Never-Trump lawmaker leaving Congress.
