Policy Positions

Alabama State Legislative Election 2018 Political Courage Test

Abortion & Reproductive

1. Do you generally support pro-choice or pro-life legislation?
- No Answer

2. Should abortion be legal when the pregnancy resulted from incest or rape?
- No Answer

3. Do you support the prohibition of public funds for organizations that perform abortions?
- No Answer

4. Other or expanded principles
- I favor decreasing abortions. However, because pregnancy is inherently a medical condition in which split second decisions are best made between patients, their families, and their doctors, I support the flexibility provided by Roe v. Wade and believe it should be coupled with additional steps which have been statistically proven effective at decreasing abortion rates such as providing access to contraception, comprehensive sex education and access to healthcare for women and their babies before during and after pregnancy.

Budget, Spending, & Tax

Budget Stabilization:

Indicate which proposals you support (if any) for balancing Alabama's budget.

1. Reducing state employee salaries AND/OR pensions?
- No Answer

2. Instituting mandatory furloughs AND/OR layoffs for state employees?
- No Answer

3. Reducing benefits for Medicaid recipients?
- No Answer

4. An income tax increase on any tax bracket?
- No Answer

5. Other or expanded principles
- I believe we need to look at our budget, and where our sources of revenue are coming from and where they are not coming from and make smart adjustments to our tax system to ensure that working Alabamians are not solely bearing the brunt of any budget stabilization measures.

Campaign Finance & Government Reform

1. Do you support any limits on campaign contributions to state candidates?
- Yes

2. Do you support the regulation of indirect campaign contributions from corporations and unions?
- Yes

3. Do you support the use of an independent AND/OR bipartisan commission for redistricting?
- Yes

4. Do you support requiring a government-issued photo identification in order to vote at the polls?
- No Answer

5. Other or expanded principles
- I support requiring identification in order to vote at the polls with the caveat that in Alabama we have to ensure that any identification requirements will not have a chilling effect on legitimate voter participation.

Crime & Public Safety

1. Do you support capital punishment for certain crimes?
- No Answer

2. Do you support the legalization of marijuana for recreational purposes?
- No Answer

3. Should a minor accused of a violent crime be prosecuted as an adult?
- No Answer

4. Do you support the enforcement of federal immigration laws by state and local police?
- No

5. Other or expanded principles
- No Answer

Economic

1. Do you support state government spending as a means of promoting economic growth?
- No Answer

2. Do you support lowering state taxes as a means of promoting economic growth?
- No Answer

3. Do you support reducing state government regulations on the private sector?
- Yes

4. Do you support expanding access to unemployment benefits?
- Yes

5. Do you support requiring welfare applicants to pass a drug test in order to receive benefits?
- No

6. Do you support an increase of the minimum wage of Alabama?
- Yes

7. Other or expanded principles
- I support allowing cities in Alabama to increase their minimum wage if they believe their economy can sustain it and if it will produce benefits for their workers and businesses. I also support looking closely at regulations to ensure that we are not unduly hampering our small and local businesses.

Education

1. Do you support adopting federal education standards in Alabama?
- No Answer

2. Do you support state funding for charter schools?
- No Answer

3. Should immigrants unlawfully present in the United States who graduate from Alabama high schools be eligible for in-state tuition at public universities?
- No Answer

4. Do you support increasing funding for the state education budget?
- Yes

5. Other or expanded principles
- I support bringing a lottery to Alabama to help fund education. I also support ensuring that public education dollars are spent only on public education and are not diverted.

Environment & Energy

1. Do you support state funding for the development of renewable energy (e.g. solar, wind, thermal)?
- Yes

2. Do you support state government regulations of greenhouse gas emissions?
- No Answer

3. Do you support increasing state funding for clean drinking water initiatives?
- Yes

4. Other or expanded principles
- It is important that we take advantage of the progress and benefits both ecologically and economically created by renewable energy.

Gun

1. Do you generally support gun-control legislation?
- No Answer

2. Should background checks be required on gun sales between private citizens at gun shows?
- Yes

3. Should teachers be allowed to bring guns into the classroom?
- No

4. Should a license be required for gun ownership?
- No Answer

5. Other or expanded principles
- Some other measures that Alabama should consider include allowing for the turn over of firearms from those who are convicted of domestic violence. We already have laws which prohibit the possession of firearms by domestic violence abusers and ensuring that those abusers turn over their firearms via law or by judicial discretion would go a long way towards enforcing our existing laws and towards protecting victims. Additionally, Alabama should consider requiring criminal background checks for gun sales by unlicensed sellers.

Health

1. Should the state government increase funding for treatment facilities to combat opioid abuse?
- Yes

2. Do you support Medicaid expansion through Alabama's health care programs?
- Yes

3. Do you support requiring individuals to purchase health care insurance?
- No Answer

4. Do you support legislation that grants citizens the right to choose to die through euthanasia?
- No Answer

5. Do you support eliminating religious exemptions for vaccinations?
- No Answer

6. Other or expanded principles
- I support increasing transparency in our healthcare and health insurance industries. Transparency is needed to ensure that we are fully aware of problems within these areas in our state and that we have the knowledge and information needed to best address them.

Social

1. Do you support the inclusion of sexual orientation in Alabama's anti-discrimination laws?
- Yes

2. Do you support the inclusion of gender identity in Alabama's anti-discrimination laws?
- Yes

3. Do you support greater efforts by Alabama state government in closing the pay gap between men and women?
- Yes

4. Do you support the removal of Confederate monuments from public spaces?
- Yes

5. Other or expanded principles
- Our laws should not impede people's ability to provide for their families. Allowing discrimination for any reason in the areas of housing, employment or education creates barriers which prevent people from being productive and contributing to their families and our economy. Additionally, the removal of Confederate monuments alone is insufficient to help resolve the tension that surrounds them. It must be coupled with a conversation about the meaning behind these monuments and the significance they hold to people throughout our state.

Legislative Priorities

In the following area, please explain in a total of 100 words or less, your top two or three priorities if elected. If they require additional funding for implementation, please explain how you would obtain this funding.
- One of my top priorities is decreasing corruption in our state government. One of the best ways to do this is through term limits and transparency which is why I have taken both a term limits and a town hall pledge. I also believe that expanding Medicaid and bringing a lottery to Alabama are vital steps to help bolster our healthcare and education as well as to attract new business to our state. Budget gains from Medicaid expansion should offset the costs of the additional funding needed for implementation.
