Policy Positions

Arizona Congressional Election 2018 Political Courage Test

Abortion

1. Do you generally support pro-choice or pro-life legislation?
- Pro-choice

2. Other or expanded principles
- This issue reaches far beyond abortion to one deep and pressing question: Do we value the lives of women? Because I believe we should value the lives of women, I support a woman's right to make decisions about her body - from contraception and reproductive health to family planning and termination. This means I believe in science-based sex education, affordable contraception availability, affordable wellness and maternity care for women, and access to safe and legal abortions.

Budget

1. In order to balance the budget, do you support an income tax increase on any tax bracket?
- Yes

2. In order to balance the budget, do you support reducing defense spending?
- Yes

3. Other or expanded principles
- I support our brave active men and women of our armed forces and their families; however, I don't support counterproductive military interventions that put our precious sons and daughters in unnecessary danger. I want Americans to be safe at home and abroad, but I don't believe that our ongoing military involvements are strengthening our national defense. We can be more efficient with our military spending while having a strong national defense; we must have a comprehensive foreign policy approach that prioritizes our national security interests according to our strategic calculations.

Campaign Finance

1. Do you support the regulation of indirect campaign contributions from corporations and unions?
- Yes

2. Other or expanded principles
- I strongly stand against corporate influence over our democracy and our party. I believe we must always put people over profits, which is why I do not accept corporate PAC money. This means no money from the pharmaceutical industry, the gun lobby, the oil, gas or coal lobbies, or any other corporate special interest group. I will fight without fear of political repercussions to end Citizens United; I will fight against political corruption. At the same time, we must take measures to protect our elections from foreign interference by securing our voting booths through blockchain technology and paper ballots.

Economy

1. Do you support federal spending as a means of promoting economic growth?
- Yes

2. Do you support lowering corporate taxes as a means of promoting economic growth?
- No

3. Other or expanded principles
- I support initiatives that directly benefit our nation's families. We must make smart investments to fuel the economy. This includes infrastructure, higher education, a livable wage, family-friendly workplaces and health care. Social safety nets such as paid family leave and guaranteed paid sick leave have proven to increase productivity and fuel economic growth. I will support small businesses through tax credits and infrastructure investments, and I will fight to ensure the tax code does not grant exclusive advantages to multinational corporations. We must also modernize our trade deals to ensure their fairness to the American people and our small businesses.

Education

1. Do you support requiring states to adopt federal education standards?
- Yes

2. Other or expanded principles
- Public schools are the foundation of our success, yet they are severely underfunded here in Arizona and across the country. We must invest in our children to attract innovation and high-paying jobs to the Valley. I will defend our public schools so our children have the skills to compete in the global economy. I will fight for universal quality early education and childcare programs; free and affordable post-secondary educational options including trade programs; and refinancing programs for outstanding college debt. We must also allocate additional federal funds to reduce our student-teacher ratio while investing in school infrastructure.

Energy & Environment

1. Do you support government funding for the development of renewable energy (e.g. solar, wind, thermal)?
- Yes

2. Do you support the federal regulation of greenhouse gas emissions?
- Yes

3. Other or expanded principles
- We need to take international steps to combat climate change. We must be a leader in environmental protections - such as a tax on carbon emissions and incentives for renewable energies - and in international cooperation that addresses sustainability on a global scale. I support protecting our way of life through a tax on carbon emissions and incentives for renewable energies so we can address climate change.

Guns

1. Do you generally support gun-control legislation?
- Yes

2. Other or expanded principles
- We can be consistent with the Second Amendment and still protect our families. The best way to protect the Second Amendment is to make gun use safer for everyone. The needed common-sense legislation is universal background checks, banning military-grade weapons and accessories that enhance weapons, and closing the gun show loophole and the boyfriend loophole. We also need to look at how kids are getting guns in the first place. We need to ensure firearms are stored safely at home while decreasing the ratio of students to counselors so that help is available to students who need it.

Health Care

1. Do you support repealing the 2010 Affordable Care Act ("Obamacare")?
- No

2. Other or expanded principles
- Our goal should be universal coverage that puts patient care and health care worker safety above insurance and pharmaceutical company profits. I would support and cosign Medicare for All legislation. Meanwhile, we must work towards creating a solid, healthy, and efficient foundation for a better health care system. We must immediately allow insurance providers to sell across state lines and allow Medicare to negotiate prescription drug prices; introduce a public option; and slash administrative costs by combining administrative aspects of Medicare, VA, and CHIP. We can find additional savings and efficiency by introducing blockchain technologies to our digitized health records.

Immigration

1. Do you support the construction of a wall along the Mexican border?
- No

2. Do you support requiring immigrants who are unlawfully present to return to their country of origin before they are eligible for citizenship?
- No

3. Other or expanded principles
- A wall along our border is an insufficient solution to border security, nor does it address the underlying foundations of the migration crisis from Latin America. I believe we must shift our energy toward adequately addressing such issues. The separation of children from their parents and placing families in jail cells is morally abhorrent and needs to end immediately. I will fight for a path to citizenship for Dreamers and a plan that puts their families on a path as well. I also support ending the green card backlog and protecting right-to-work visas for spouses such as H4 EAD.

Marijuana

1. Do you support the legalization of marijuana for recreational purposes?
- Yes

2. Other or expanded principles
- I believe we should end the federal prohibition of marijuana and allow states to decide for themselves how to best regulate its use and sale. States that have legalized and regulated have seen economic booms and reductions in crime. I support federal marijuana reform that allows states to decide for themselves how to regulate the taxation and sale of recreational marijuana. Congress should not interfere. I support legalizing medical marijuana nationwide and allowing legal marijuana businesses to utilize traditional financial tools and banks to run their businesses. No person should be denied the medicine they need because of outdated laws.

National Security

1. Should the United States use military force in order to prevent governments hostile to the U.S. from possessing a nuclear weapon?
- No

2. Do you support increased American intervention in Middle Eastern conflicts beyond air support?
- No

3. Other or expanded principles
- No Answer

Administrative Priorities

Please explain in a total of 100 words or less, your top two or three priorities if elected. If they require additional funding for implementation, please explain how you would obtain this funding.
- We must work toward bringing an end to corruption and corporate influence over our politics and our government through strong campaign finance reform. I will take measures to ensure transparency in our elections so that no American is voiceless in the legislative process because of large corporate spending in politics. I believe that a healthy economy requires a healthy workforce. Therefore, I will fight for equal pay, paid maternity, paternity, and sick leave, universal early education, and free and affordable post-secondary educational options including trade programs. I will fight to strengthen and expand Social Security and ensure a livable wage.
