Priority Issues:

Campaign Finance Reform

  • I recently did an analysis of many incumbents in our Davis County and Utah state. I found that while they say they will vote for certain things like ?clean air?, ?term limits?, and ?increasing funding of our schools?. I found they don?t work to pass legislation for those things, but instead arrange for the private special interests to fund items like the ?Inland Port? that will add additional pollution and congest our infrastructure! They could be supporting much better paying and clean high tech job solutions instead for our future needs which are just as viable! They are accepting money from horrible companies and organizations that do great harm to us and then they refuse to pass legislation that would protect our citizens from their harmful practices like predatory payday lenders, moving oil refineries out of the much too polluted valley for two examples.

  • It?s easy to discover this information, but be prepared for a shock! Some of these seemingly nice professional politician candidates are not who you thought they were. You can see this for yourself at https://www.followthemoney.org/ to see if it is citizens or organizations giving money to them for legislative favors. In my House District, it?s about 91% special interest favors to only 9% of our citizens, many relatives and other politicians. To see how this translates into bills written and passed and bills that should be written but are not, or not passed see their votes at https://votesmart.org/

  • We must become involved now, hold our representatives accountable for wrong actions or actions needed, but not taken while they are in office. We must pay attention to what our representatives are doing, and if we don?t like what we seeing, we must support and elect better candidates.

Utah State Legislative Election 2018 Political Courage Test

    Abortion & Reproductive

    1. Do you generally support pro-choice or pro-life legislation?
    - Pro-choice

    2. Should abortion be legal when the pregnancy resulted from incest or rape?
    - Yes

    3. Do you support the prohibition of public funds for organizations that perform abortions?
    - No

    4. Other or expanded principles
    - As a senior, I adopted two girls from the overcrowded broken state foster care system that no one wanted. They had been severely traumatized by meth addict parents. It is not easy to become a newly single parent in my 60's but since too few younger adults are adopting, I did. We have horrible unsafe and abusive foster group homes. Once we can take care of the children no one wants or will adopt or have safe loving foster homes for them, then talk to me about forcing women to have more children, that they don't want.

    Budget, Spending, & Tax

    Budget Stabilization:

Indicate which proposals you support (if any) for balancing Utah's budget.

    1. Reducing state employee salaries AND/OR pensions?
    - No

    2. Instituting mandatory furloughs AND/OR layoffs for state employees?
    - No

    3. Reducing benefits for Medicaid recipients?
    - No

    4. An income tax increase on any tax bracket?
    - Yes

    5. Other or expanded principles
    - We can't afford to give the top 1% a free ride or almost a free ride. Corporations should not get one of our lowest tax brackets. We can and must balance our budget, and with funds from those that can afford it and should pay their fair share, not from low to middle income Americans.

    Campaign Finance & Government Reform

    1. Do you support any limits on campaign contributions to state candidates?
    - Yes

    2. Do you support the regulation of indirect campaign contributions from corporations and unions?
    - Yes

    3. Do you support the use of an independent AND/OR bipartisan commission for redistricting?
    - Yes

    4. Do you support requiring a government-issued photo identification in order to vote at the polls?
    - No

    5. Do you support using primary conventions as the sole method of selecting political party nominees?
    - No

    6. Other or expanded principles
    - No Answer

    Crime & Public Safety

    1. Do you support capital punishment for certain crimes?
    - No

    2. Do you support the legalization of marijuana for recreational purposes?
    - No

    3. Should a minor accused of a violent crime be prosecuted as an adult?
    - No

    4. Do you support the enforcement of federal immigration laws by state and local police?
    - No

    5. Other or expanded principles
    - No Answer

    Economic

    1. Do you support state government spending as a means of promoting economic growth?
    - No

    2. Do you support lowering state taxes as a means of promoting economic growth?
    - No

    3. Do you support reducing state government regulations on the private sector?
    - No

    4. Do you support expanding access to unemployment benefits?
    - No

    5. Do you support requiring welfare applicants to pass a drug test in order to receive benefits?
    - Yes

    6. Do you support an increase of the minimum wage of Utah?
    - Yes

    7. Other or expanded principles
    - Since I worked in the foster care system, I saw too many adults having children for the purpose of obtaining additional welfare payments, then severely neglecting and abusing those children to feed their drug habits. Such testing could be used to determine who needs rehabilitation help and to check on the children of drug users to see if they are healthy and well cared for. My experience is that they will be saved from severe abuse.

    Education

    1. Do you support adopting federal education standards in Utah?
    - Yes

    2. Do you support state funding for charter schools?
    - No

    3. Should immigrants unlawfully present in the United States who graduate from Utah high schools be eligible for in-state tuition at public universities?
    - Yes

    4. Do you support increasing the state gasoline tax to fund the education budget?
    - Yes

    5. Other or expanded principles
    - I would prefer to add to the education budget with a state income tax bracket for higher income individuals. The gasoline tax method harms low-income students and individuals in a much higher proportion of their income than it does high income or wealthy individuals. Those that can least afford to fund it are required to do so.

    Environment & Energy

    1. Do you support state funding for the development of renewable energy (e.g. solar, wind, thermal)?
    - Yes

    2. Do you support state government regulations of greenhouse gas emissions?
    - Yes

    3. Do you support increasing state funding for clean drinking water initiatives?
    - No

    4. Do you support increasing state funding to improve air quality?
    - No

    5. Other or expanded principles
    - It is NOT a matter here of state funding. It is a matter of state campaign finance reform. Legislators here are receiving funds from companies creating great pollution here. So they don't stop it and relocate those companies! For example, we have several old oil refineries created in 1920-50 antique facilities pumping large amounts of pollutants into our valley even on our red and orange dangerous days. Why? Because those companies have bought our legislators!

    Gun

    1. Do you generally support gun-control legislation?
    - Yes

    2. Should background checks be required on gun sales between private citizens at gun shows?
    - Yes

    3. Should teachers be allowed to bring guns into the classroom?
    - No

    4. Should a license be required for gun ownership?
    - Yes

    5. Other or expanded principles
    - We can honor our 2nd amendment rights, and still, make our schools and other places safe from massive shootings. We do not need to allow free and easy sales of multiple assualt type rifles, ammunition, and gun stalks and such for that purpose. It is foolish and it is harming our American way of life to permit anyone to buy rifles that can kill hundreds of Americans in seconds. That's not needed for hunting or self-defense.

    Health

    1. Should the state government increase funding for treatment facilities to combat opioid abuse?
    - Yes

    2. Do you support Medicaid expansion through Utah's health care programs?
    - Yes

    3. Do you support requiring individuals to purchase health care insurance?
    - Yes

    4. Do you support legislation that grants citizens the right to choose to die through euthanasia?
    - Yes

    5. Do you support eliminating religious exemptions for vaccinations?
    - No

    6. Other or expanded principles
    - No Answer

    Social

    1. Do you support the inclusion of sexual orientation in Utah's anti-discrimination laws?
    - Yes

    2. Do you support the inclusion of gender identity in Utah's anti-discrimination laws?
    - Yes

    3. Do you support greater efforts by Utah state government in closing the pay gap between men and women?
    - Yes

    4. Other or expanded principles
    - No Answer

    Legislative Priorities

In the following area, please explain in a total of 100 words or less, your top two or three priorities if elected. If they require additional funding for implementation, please explain how you would obtain this funding.
    - 1) Campaign Finance Reform- We live in a state of bought and sold leadership. Lobbyists, corporations and other organizations fund an average of 92% of our Republican leader's campaigns. The people only about 8%. Who do they listen too? Not the people at only 8%! Other candidates can't compete fairly when they can't raise that large amount of money to advertise and buy elections. We need a fair playing field and also a place where non-professionals, not just politicians can run and serve in office. 2) Carefully Managed Growth- Affordable housing, pollution, and other standards, before more building.
