Policy Positions

Remove Corporate & Dark Money from Politics

Our electoral process needs urgent reform.

We have to take corporate and dark money out of politics. For too long, our representatives have not been public servants but have been doing the bidding of their corporate sugar daddies.

Senators should serve their constituents, not their corporate and super-rich donors.

I promise that I will not take one red cent from corporations or PACs. I will only take donations from individuals.

Free State College for 2 Years

Last month's State budget contained devastating cuts for Miami-Dade College of up to $14million for this coming year. This will hurt our students - 66 percent of whom come from low-income families, and 30 percent of whom live below the poverty line.

We should be expanding access to quality education – not cutting it. That's why I am proposing that we offer free State College for the first two years for all students who graduate with their class or pass their GED and who need assistance.

Protect the Environment

In South Florida we have a responsibility to preserve the environment, not just for ourselves but also for our Caribbean neighbors.

Offshore drilling, pipelines (like Sabal Trail) and fracking endanger the environment and when elected I would introduce a bill to ban all of them on a State-wide basis.

Florida marine life is also in danger from mindless littering, and I would seek to implement legislation to ban Styrofoam cups and plastic bags.

Universal Healthcare

As the world's leading economy, we have a duty to improve the health of our citizens.

We in the United States spend almost twice as much as Europeans on healthcare as a percentage of GDP, but our child mortality rates are 50% worse than those for the UK, France and Germany.

The copays alone for many drugs in the US cost several times more than the same drugs cost without a prescription in Europe or Latin America.

Last month's State Budget slashed Medicaid to our excellent local hospitals by $175 million, while leaving the hundreds of millions in corporate welfare for Big Pharma untouched. Jackson Memorial alone will face cuts of $32 million, and that includes Jackson South - right here in our community. These cuts will further deteriorate health outcomes, especially of the neediest people in our community.

We all know the devastating cost of healthcare on our families. It's only fat-cat politicians and the wealthy who don't seem to care. Big Pharma, Insurers and the rest of the for profit Healthcare industry are profiting at the expense of our citizens' health.

I believe we can implement a Medicare for All solution in Florida that will improve health, reduce waste, fraud and overcharging in the medical system.

Stop the increases in MDX Tolls

An issue that grinds each day that I'm behind the wheel is the high price of tolls.

MDX was established in 1993 to improve our roads by keeping toll revenues within the county.

However, between 2014 and 2016 – MDX's revenues soared by 88% due to toll increases and more toll plazas. It's out of control. It needs to stop.

Tolls are a regressive form of taxation that impact working families the hardest.

When elected as your Senator, I promise to introduce a bill to stop MDX increasing its tolls by more than the rate of inflation. Capital improvements that require more than a 2-3% increase should require a voter referendum.

Restoration of Voting Rights

Another area important to me is how we engage and reengage people in the political process. In Florida, in addition to gerrymandering, preventing convicted felons from voting has been a tool to suppress the minority vote. It is a glaring example of institutional racism - especially when rich kids caught committing the same offense often only get a slap on the wrist.

I fully support the move to place the Voting Restoration Amendment on the Ballot for November 2018.

Reform our State Prison System

JaneOur rate of imprisonment in Florida is the 9th highest in the World at 1 in every 104 adults.

Florida's annual prison budget is over $2 billion.

The influence of private prison companies on our politicians has been too great for too long.

I promise that if elected, I will introduce legislation based on the success of New York State over the last 20 years to halve the Florida Prison Population while also halving crime.

This will save $1 billion a year to provide better quality rehabilitation, education and healthcare.

Decriminalize Recreational Marijuana

I also believe we should decriminalize recreationalmarijuana and control its distribution using the successful, well-thought out Colorado model.

Florida taxpayers would save at least $50 million a year in prison costs alone and would also see increased tax revenues of as much as $800 million a year. This pays for my free State College plan.
