Policy Positions

South Dakota State Legislative Election 2018 Political Courage Test

Abortion & Reproductive

1. Do you generally support pro-choice or pro-life legislation?
- Pro-life

2. Should abortion be legal when the pregnancy resulted from incest or rape?
- Yes

3. Do you support the prohibition of public funds for organizations that perform abortions?
- Yes

4. Other or expanded principles
- While I support rights of most individuals to do as they please, barring harming others, I do not support taxpayers/government paying for the exercising of those rights.

Budget, Spending, & Tax

Budget Stabilization:

Indicate which proposals you support (if any) for balancing South Dakota's budget.

1. Reducing state employee salaries AND/OR pensions?
- No Answer

2. Instituting mandatory furloughs AND/OR layoffs for state employees?
- No Answer

3. Reducing benefits for Medicaid recipients?
- No Answer

4. Other or expanded principles
- This is an irrelevant question as the budget is balanced every year. In general, I support less spending and more self-responsibility.

Campaign Finance & Government Reform

1. Do you support any limits on campaign contributions to state candidates?
- No

2. Do you support the regulation of indirect campaign contributions from corporations and unions?
- No

3. Do you support the use of an independent AND/OR bipartisan commission for redistricting?
- No

4. Do you support requiring a government-issued photo identification in order to vote at the polls?
- Yes

5. Do you support South Dakota transitioning to an open primary election system?
- No

6. Do you support prohibiting out-of-state contributions to state ballot initiative committees?
- Yes

7. Other or expanded principles
- In a free market, there should be no limits on contributions from entities that have a presence in the state of South Dakota. (Example: Casey's, while headquartered in Iowa, has a physical presence in S.D.) If political parties who are out of power, including my own Libertarian Party, does not like the districting laws, then convince the voters to change their affiliation and who they vote for. Quit looking for government solutions, and take the bull by the horns.

Crime & Public Safety

1. Do you support capital punishment for certain crimes?
- Yes

2. Do you support the legalization of marijuana for recreational purposes?
- No Answer

3. Should a minor accused of a violent crime be prosecuted as an adult?
- No Answer

4. Do you support the enforcement of federal immigration laws by state and local police?
- No

5. Other or expanded principles
- While I am a strong supporter for medicinal marijuana, I am not a promoter of recreational weed, though in a free market, it should probably be legal, regulated and taxed. Alcohol is far more harmful and that is legal. Prohibition proved long ago that bans do not work and get innocent people killed in illegal trade. Stater and local law enforcement should not enforce federal laws, and the minor/violent crime issue is to involved to discuss here.

Economic

1. Do you support state government spending as a means of promoting economic growth?
- No

2. Do you support lowering state taxes as a means of promoting economic growth?
- Yes

3. Do you support reducing state government regulations on the private sector?
- Yes

4. Do you support expanding access to unemployment benefits?
- No

5. Do you support requiring welfare applicants to pass a drug test in order to receive benefits?
- No

6. Do you support an increase of the minimum wage of South Dakota?
- No Answer

7. Do you support legalized state-sponsored sports betting in South Dakota?
- No

8. Other or expanded principles
- Government should not be in the business of "business". The more money one can keep, the more they will buy to expand the economy. Same thing with regulations. Drug tests can have too many false positives and is an invasion of privacy except in public safety jobs. The minimum wage already has automatic increases. Betting should not be state-sponsored but state regulation of private industry.

Education

1. Do you support adopting federal education standards in South Dakota?
- No

2. Do you support state funding for charter schools?
- No

3. Should immigrants unlawfully present in the United States who graduate from South Dakota high schools be eligible for in-state tuition at public universities?
- No

4. Other or expanded principles
- No Answer

Environment & Energy

1. Do you support state funding for the development of renewable energy (e.g. solar, wind, thermal)?
- No

2. Do you support state government regulations of greenhouse gas emissions?
- Yes

3. Do you support increasing state funding for clean drinking water initiatives?
- No

4. Other or expanded principles
- Again, the state should not be in the business of doing "business". Any industry worth having should be able to survive on it's own without government assistance/subsidies. A certain amount of regulation is needed to halt blatant pollution and I would have to see individual proposals. Clean water initiatives? Really? Clean water laws paid for by those using it, not taxpayer/government.

Gun

1. Do you generally support gun-control legislation?
- No

2. Should background checks be required on gun sales between private citizens at gun shows?
- Yes

3. Should teachers be allowed to bring guns into the classroom?
- Yes

4. Should a license be required for gun ownership?
- No

5. Other or expanded principles
- Individuals who have committed no crime of violence should be able to carry a gun in all places except where alcohol is present (i.e., bars) or places of reasonable vengeance (i.e., courtrooms). No license should be required but a background check should be. We also need to address due process for mental health issues.

Health

1. Should the state government increase funding for treatment facilities to combat opioid abuse?
- No Answer

2. Do you support Medicaid expansion through South Dakota's health care programs?
- No

3. Do you support requiring individuals to purchase health care insurance?
- No

4. Do you support legislation that grants citizens the right to choose to die through euthanasia?
- Yes

5. Do you support eliminating religious exemptions for vaccinations?
- Yes

6. Other or expanded principles
- I would need to research what we already spending on treatment facilities but taxes from tobacco and alcohol should go to this, not tech schools (IM25). Medicaid expansion would result in 1 of 5 South Dakotans on assistance. Where does it stop? No one should be forced to buy a product simply because they are alive, that's not what our forefathers fought for. The right to die is a right to self-determination, the same as surgery, medication, and other "not natural" forces.

Social

1. Do you support the inclusion of sexual orientation in South Dakota's anti-discrimination laws?
- No Answer

2. Do you support the inclusion of gender identity in South Dakota's anti-discrimination laws?
- No Answer

3. Do you support greater efforts by South Dakota state government in closing the pay gap between men and women?
- No Answer

4. Other or expanded principles
- I support anti-discrimination laws by government entities or those directly receiving taxpayer funding, but not private business enterprises. Same thing with pay gap as there is no such thing as a one-size fits all.

Legislative Priorities

In the following area, please explain in a total of 100 words or less, your top two or three priorities if elected. If they require additional funding for implementation, please explain how you would obtain this funding.
- I am huge on individual rights and self-determination, including: right-to-die, medicinal marijuana, running a business as you see fit w/o government interference, and state rights free from federal intrusion on issues not specifically listed in the U.S. Constitution (which belong to the Tenth Amendment). While I support liberties, I do not believe people have the right to benefit their financial, physical, or other personal well-being via taxation through the government.
