Dave Jones (Democrat) was a candidate for Attorney General of California. Jones lost the primary on June 5, 2018.
Jones was the Democratic California commissioner of insurance from 2011 to 2019.
Previously, Jones worked as a legal aid attorney with Legal Services of Northern California, a nonprofit, public interest law firm serving low-income residents in 22 California counties. He was also a special assistant and counsel to U.S. Attorney General Janet Reno during President Bill Clinton's administration. He obtained degrees from DePauw University, Harvard Law School, and the Kennedy School of Government.
When he served in the state government, Jones was a member of the Sacramento Metropolitan Cable Commission, Sacramento Regional Sanitation District, Sacramento Solid Waste Authority, and Sacramento Transportation Authority.
Incumbent Xavier Becerra (D) defeated Steven Bailey (R) in the general election for Attorney General of California on November 6, 2018.

Jones was named as a potential candidate in the 2016 election for the U.S. Senate, to represent California.
Jones ran for re-election as California Commissioner of Insurance in the 2014 elections. He was re-nominated in the top-two primary election on June 3, 2014. He faced Republican Ted Gaines in the general election. The general election took place on November 4, 2014.

Jones was ineligible to run for re-election in 2010 due to the term limits of the California State Assembly. Instead he ran for, and won, election as the California Commissioner of Insurance in the November 2, 2010 election.
