Policy Positions

Texas Congressional Election 2010 Political Courage Test

Abortion

1. Do you consider yourself pro-choice or pro-life?
- Pro-life

2. Should abortion be legal only within the first trimester of pregnancy?
- No

3. Should abortion be legal when the pregnancy resulted from incest or rape?
- No

4. Should abortion be legal when the life of the woman is endangered?
- Yes

5. Should federal subsidies be prohibited from being used for abortion procedures?
- Yes

6. Other or expanded principles
- B) To be clear, no trimester should it be legal - only for life of mother concern. There is perhaps no issue closer to my heart than protecting the sanctity of life. The lost lives that result from abortions are lost hopes, our lost moments with future family members, and the lost dreams of an entire generation. In founding America, we made a promise to protect Life, liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness. We are called by a higher power to speak up for those who cannot defend themselves.

7. Space exploration

8. United Nations

9. Welfare

10. Other or expanded categories
- Spending in Washington is out of control. We have all seen the volatility and instability in Greece due to unsustainable spending and entitlements. Their problem will become our problem if we don't act now to balance the budget and reduce our national debt. I pledge to take on the special interests and crony capitalism currently wreaking havoc on our nation by proposing a return to 2006 spending levels, banning all earmarks, defunding programs that waste taxpayer money, and adopting smarter criteria to manage entitlement programs. We can and will restore fiscal discipline to Washington.

12. Do you support using government funds in an effort to stimulate and improve the economy?
- No

Taxes

Indicate what federal tax levels (#1-6) you support for the following general categories. Select one number per category- you can use a number more than once.

1. Other or expanded principles
- Our current tax system is complicated, intrusive, and retards economic growth. It penalizes production, driving up prices, and punishes workers, picking our pockets before we even receive our paychecks. Today, Americans spend a third of the year or more working not for themselves or their families, but to pay for the excesses of Washington bureaucrats. The result is unlimited expansion of the federal government. We need tax reform now. The FairTax will bring prosperity back to America by abolishing the IRS and taxing individuals on what they consume rather than what they make. For almost everyone, this means lower taxes.

Business and Employment

1. Do you support privatizing elements of Social Security?
- Yes

2. Do you support reducing government regulations on the private sector?
- Yes

3. Do you support increasing the federal minimum wage?
- No

4. Do you support the ability of workers to unionize?
- Yes

5. Do you support federal funding for job-training programs that retrain displaced workers?
- No

6. Other or expanded principles
- To be clear on d) above, I support the ABILITY to unionize. I'll make job creation a priority by reforming the tax code and easing regulations that stifle growth. I will vote against the cap-and-trade tax, which according to the White House's own numbers will cost every American family an additional $1761 a year in energy bills while driving up the cost of products and services. I will vote to make the Bush tax cuts permanent, which have saved the average middle class family over $10,000 in tax liabilities since enacted with bipartisan support in 2001.

Campaign Finance and Government Reform

1. Do you support increasing the amount individuals are permitted to contribute to federal campaigns?
- Yes

2. Should Congress regulate indirect campaign contributions from corporations and unions?
- No

3. Do you support removing all contribution limits on federal campaigns?
- Yes

4. Should candidates for federal office be encouraged to meet voluntary spending limits?
- No

5. Do you support giving the President the power of the line item veto for items concerning appropriations?
- Yes

6. Do you support limiting the President's ability to define how legislation is applied through the use of signing statements?
- Yes

7. Other or expanded principles
- With great freedom, comes great responsibility. America was founded by men of great faith who trusted the people to select their leaders diligently, and in turn, trusted lawmakers to serve the greater good and aspire to the highest of moral standards. In order to govern effectively, our Congress must be held accountable not just to the people, but also to a higher power. Congress swears before our Creator to protect and uphold the Constitution, and no one should be above the law, especially not our public servants.

Crime

1. Do you support capital punishment for certain crimes?
- Yes

2. Do you support programs that provide prison inmates with vocational and job-related training and job-placement assistance when released?
- Yes

3. Do you support programs that provide prison inmates with substance abuse treatment?
- Yes

4. Do you support reduced prison sentences for non-violent offenders?
- No

5. Do you support mandatory prison sentences for selling illegal drugs?
- Yes

6. Other or expanded principles
- No Answer

Education

1. Do you support federal education standards and testing requirements for K-12 students?
- No

2. Do you support federal funding for universal pre-K programs?
- No

3. Do you support federal funding for charter schools?
- No

4. Do you support federal funding for K-12 school vouchers?
- No

5. Do you support the federal government providing college students with financial aid?
- No

6. Other or expanded principles
- The governing, testing and funding of Pre-K to 12 schools are best funded locally. College aid is also best done at the state and/or college campus level. Private sector banks are best suited to make and manage college loans.

Environment and Energy

1. Do you support enacting environmental regulations aimed at reducing the effects of climate change?
- No

2. Do you support international emissions targets aimed at reducing the effects of climate change?
- No

3. Do you support allowing energy producers to trade carbon credits under a "cap and trade" system?
- No

4. Do you support strengthening fuel efficiency standards on all gasoline and diesel-powered engines, including cars, trucks, and sport utility vehicles?
- Yes

5. Do you support domestic oil exploration in federally-protected areas?
- Yes

6. Do you support federal funding for the development of alternative energy?
- No

7. Do you support the development of nuclear reactors?
- Yes

8. Other or expanded principles
- I do not buy into the theory of climate change, which until recently, was presented as global warming. Cap and trade will really be block job creation and tax businesses.

Gun

1. Do you support restrictions on the purchase and possession of guns?
- No

2. Do you believe that the Second Amendment guarantees the right of individual citizens to own guns?
- Yes

3. Do you support allowing individuals to carry concealed guns?
- Yes

4. Do you support a ban on assault rifles?
- No

5. Other or expanded principles
- All firearms could be brandished in an assault-type fashion, and creating a banned class leads to the subjective process of choosing what weapons to include in the class.

Health

1. Do you support a publicly-administered health insurance option?
- No

2. Do you support expanding access to health care through commercial health insurance reform?
- Yes

3. Should the federal government expand eligibility for tax-free medical savings accounts?
- Yes

4. Do you support monetary limits on damages that can be collected in malpractice lawsuits?
- Yes

5. Do you support relaxing regulations on the importation of prescription drugs?
- Yes

6. Other or expanded principles
- In a narrow partisan vote, Congress passed an unpopular bill expanding government control of health care and placing 150,000 unelected bureaucrats and 16,000 IRS agents between patients and their doctors. This is not reform. It is a takeover of the health care industry by lifelong politicians, and it fails to address the high costs facing American families. As a practicing M.D., I find this unacceptable, and I pledge to repeal this legislation. I will lead the charge to scrap this monstrosity and write new legislation that adheres to the free market principles this nation was founded on.

Immigration

1. Do you support a pathway to citizenship for illegal immigrants?
- No

2. Do you support decreasing the number of legal immigrants allowed into the country?
- No

3. Do you support establishing English as the official national language?
- Yes

4. Do you support the enforcement of federal immigration laws by state and local police?
- Yes

5. Other or expanded principles
- I will make border security a national priority, including the use of unmanned drones, the National Guard, and a border fence where necessary. I will look for ways to assist Mexico's government in fighting drug violence to stabilize their economy. I will not vote for amnesty, and I will not support any path to citizenship for illegal immigrants until the border is 100% secure. Logic dictates the solution to this crisis. Our politicians have spent too many years providing lip service and offering vaporous reforms without stopping the leak.

International Policy

1. Do you support United States military action in Afghanistan?
- Yes

2. Do you support increasing military assistance for Afghanistan?
- Yes

3. Do you support increasing economic development assistance for Afghanistan?
- Yes

4. Should the United States continue to strike suspected terrorist targets in Pakistan?
- Yes

5. Do you support granting aid to countries when it is in the security interests of the United States?
- Yes

6. Should the United States support the creation of a Palestinian state?
- Yes

7. Do you support increasing sanctions on Iran if it continues to defy United Nations mandates?
- Yes

8. Do you support the withdrawal of United States troops from Iraq?
- No

9. Do you support the United States' involvement in free trade agreements?
- Yes

10. Other or expanded principles
- The surest path to diplomacy will always be through a position of strength. This administration has spent too much time trying to appease our enemies while alienating our allies. Predictably, such weakness in the face of adversity has only emboldened dictators around the world and hampered international efforts to enforce sanctions on unstable regimes. I favor sanctions against regimes who thumb their nose at the international community, and our efforts in Iraq and Afghanistan as long as there is a clear, defined mission. A democratic Iraq and a democratic Afghanistan are the best insurance against future terror attacks.

Social

1. Should marriage only be between one man and one woman?
- Yes

2. Do you support allowing openly-gay men and women to serve in the United States military?
- No

3. Do you support federal funding for embryonic stem cell research?
- No

4. Should the federal government end affirmative action programs?
- Yes

5. Other or expanded principles
- No Answer

Legislative Priorities

Please explain in a total of 100 words or less, your top two or three priorities if elected. If they require additional funding for implementation, please explain how you would obtain this funding.
- I am a mother, wife, ER doctor and a strong woman of faith who is ready to help make this a stronger, safer more prosperous nation. I am running for Congress to limit federal government to the bounds of the U.S. Constitution as written?not as interpreted--and to reverse congressional actions contrary to the Constitution, like the recent nationalization of healthcare. In sum, if sent to Washington, I will help:? Keep our nation safe.? Keep government out of our businesses, homes, and wallets.? Create an environment that fosters job retention and job creation.
