Personal Details

Gavin Newsom (D) is the 40th governor of California, having won the 2018 election with 62 percent of the vote. Newsom lists increasing affordability and "standing up for California's values" as his priorities as governor, saying that "California has a responsibility and opportunity to show the country and the world what inclusive, progressive government can achieve."

Before assuming statewide office, Newsom spent 15 years in local government. His political career began in 1996, when Mayor Willie Brown appointed him to the San Francisco Parking and Traffic Commission. He then served on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors and as the city's mayor. His first statewide office was that of lieutenant governor, to which he was elected in 2010.

In 1997, when he was appointed to the board of supervisors, Newsom referred to himself as a "dogmatic fiscal conservative and a social liberal." During his 2018 gubernatorial campaign, Newsom said, "The more educated I become, the more I become a social-justice warrior about systemic racism. But I’m still a passionate free-enterprise Democrat. And I’m like [Gov. Jerry Brown]—you’ve got to balance budgets, too."

As San Francisco's new mayor in February 2004, Newsom ordered the county clerk to begin issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples, contrary to state law—a decision The Mercury News said "sparked Gavin Newsom’s political rise." He issued the order after attending President George W. Bush's State of the Union Address, where Bush said he supported banning same-sex unions.

Newsom became governor of California in January 2019—at which time California had filed 45 lawsuits against the administration of President Donald Trump (R), setting a record for state-led lawsuits against an administration over a two-year period. Newsom said the following in his inaugural address on January 7, 2019: "[T]here is an administration in Washington hostile to California’s values and interests. California has always helped write America’s future. ... [W]hat we do today is even more consequential because of what’s happening in our country. People’s lives, freedom, security, the water we drink, the air we breathe—they all hang in the balance. The country is watching us."
