But at least one person who made the list has said he would prefer to stay exactly where he currently is.
During an interview with Fox News' Maria Bartiromo, Texas GOP Sen. Ted Cruz was asked if he was interested in the Supreme Court.
Without hesitation, Cruz said it wasn't the job for him.
"You know, I don’t," Cruz told the Fox News host. "It is deeply honoring. It’s humbling to be included in the list. I’m grateful that the president has that confidence in me."
"But it’s not the desire of my heart. I want to be in the political fight. I want to be fighting to nominate and confirm three, four, five principled constitutionalist justices. But that’s not where I want to serve. I want to stay fighting right where I am in the U.S. Senate," Cruz added.
Trump unveiled his list of Supreme Court nominees last week and it sent shockwaves.
While speaking to reporters at the White House, the president announced that Republican Senators Tom Cotton of Arkansas, Josh Hawley of Missouri, and Ted Cruz of Texas are included on his updated potential SCOTUS nominee list.
Moments after Trump added Cotton to his shortlist, the Arkansas Republican tweeted, “It’s time for Roe v. Wade to go.”
After the announcement, Hawley thanked the president but tweeted that he has declined a potential nomination.
"I appreciate the President’s confidence in listing me as a potential Supreme Court nominee," he wrote on Twitter. "But as I told the President, Missourians elected me to fight for them in the Senate, and I have no interest in the high court. I look forward to confirming constitutional conservatives."
Other names from Trump's list include:
- Bridget Bade, 9th Circuit Court of Appeals
- Paul Clement, former U.S. solicitor general
- Stuart Kyle Duncan, 5th Circuit judge
- Stephen Engel, assistant attorney general
- Noel Francesco, the former solicitor general
- James Ho, 5th Circuit judge

White House Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany said in a statement, “President Trump’s list of potential Supreme Court nominees demonstrates his commitment to appointing originalists, who will abide by the Constitution, and textualists, who will implement the plain meaning of statutes. They will uphold the rule of law and ensure that America continues to shine as a beacon of freedom and justice around the world.”
