Joe T. May (Republican) was a candidate who sought election to the Virginia State Senate to represent District 33. May lost the general special election on January 8, 2019.
May is a former Independent member of the Virginia House of Delegates, representing District 33 from 1994 to 2014.
On December 3, 2013, May left the Republican Party. He cited concerns over party leadership choosing the site of a nominating convention that would keep many voters from participating.
May earned his B.S. in Electrical Engineering from Virginia Polytechnic Institute in 1962. He founded a technology firm called EIT in 1977, which has since manufactured products used for UV light measurement and railroad safety.
