Estes Award from the American Heart Association, Volunteer of the Year from the American Cancer Society, NFIB/Missouri 2008 Small Business Champion, and was honored as the first recipient of the Outstanding Leadership Cape Girardeau Alumni Award in 2004. She has been featured in the first edition (July 2011) "Women to Know in Missouri" section of The New You magazine, by KFVS-TV 12 and the Southeast Missourian regarding women in business and in My Business, The Small Business Magazine from NFIB, "The Activist at Work," August/ September 2006. In addition, she was nominee for a Melanie Blunt First Lady Award in 2008.

  • Dr. Helen Kinney was an esteemed "Henry Street Nurse" in New York City before coming to Southeast Missouri State College in 1958. At the invitation of the Governor of Missouri, she established a state-wide pilot for nursing education with the innovation of a two-year, university nursing program. Countless times she lectured that we were being educated as professional nurses, not trained. She further elaborated that training was for animals, not people! One of our educational opportunities involved administering medications to patients for which there were "5 Rights"- the Right patient, the Right medication, the Right dosage, the Right route, and the Right time. Without any doubt, Dr. Kinney permanently instilled in us that the lives of our patients were dependent on doing things "Right."

  • Marie Nenninger

  • My mother, Marie Nenninger, grew up in Laflin, MO, a very small town in Bollinger County that is no longer on any map. Her family was very poor and lived off the land with hard work and determination. She only completed the eighth grade, not by choice, but by geography. With the nearest high school in Marble Hill, she nor her siblings could attend. However, what she lacked in formal education, she possessed in conservative common sense and wisdom. She lived her Christian faith by example and believed that truth, integrity and character are the foundational values of a worthy life. For her, doing the right things was how she lived her life and how she expected me to live mine.
