Kevin McAleenan is the current acting secretary of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. He is the seventh person to serve in the position. President Donald Trump (R) announced McAleenan as the acting secretary via Twitter on April 7, 2019.
The secretary of Homeland Security is responsible for "counterterrorism, cybersecurity, aviation security, border security, port security, maritime security, administration and enforcement of our immigration laws, protection of our national leaders, protection of critical infrastructure, detection of and protection against chemical, biological and nuclear threats to the homeland, and response to disasters."
McAleenan obtained a B.A. from Amherst College and a J.D. from the University of Chicago Law School.
