Policy Positions

Mico Lucide’s campaign website highlights the following issues:

Abortion & Reproductive Issues:

Pro-choice a) Do you generally support pro-choice or pro-life legislation?
Yes b) Should abortion be legal when the pregnancy resulted from incest or rape?
Yes c) Should abortion be legal when the life of the woman is endangered?
No d) Do you support the prohibition of public funds for organizations that perform abortions?
  e) Other or expanded principles:

Budget, Spending, & Tax Issues:

1) Budget Stabilization:

Indicate which proposals you support (if any) for balancing New Jersey's budget.

No a) Reducing state employee salaries AND/OR pensions
Yes b) Instituting mandatory furloughs AND/OR layoffs for state employees
No c) Reducing benefits for Medicaid recipients
Yes d) An income tax increase on any tax bracket
  e) Other or expanded principles:

Adding a tax bracket to modestly increase taxes on the ultra wealthy will assist with balancing the budget. Additionally, switching to a medicare for all system for healthcare has a long-term positive effect on the economy, allowing a reduction in property taxes for most New Jerseyans. Without needing to cover the cost of healthcare for their staff, schools can focus on other priorities and bring down the property taxes. This will also make NJ attractive for businesses, who will no longer need to have costly healthcare plans, bringing business and job opportunities to NJ.

Campaign Finance & Government Reform Issues:

a) Do you support limits on the following types of contributions for state candidates?

Yes 1) Individual
Yes 2) Political Action Committee
Yes 3) Corporate
Yes 4) Political Party
Yes b) Do you support requiring full and timely disclosure of campaign finance information?
Yes c) Do you support the regulation of indirect campaign contributions from corporations and unions?
Yes d) Do you support the use of an independent AND/OR bipartisan commission for redistricting?
No e) Do you support requiring a government-issued photo identification in order to vote at the polls?
  f) Other or expanded principles:

We must maintain the integrity of our election system by making politicians accountable to all of their constituents. We must open our primaries, remove barriers for third parties, and ensure campaign financing information is easily accessible and digestible for people in New Jersey.

Crime & Public Safety Issues:

No a) Do you support capital punishment for certain crimes?
Yes b) Do you support alternatives to incarceration for certain non-violent offenders, such as mandatory counseling or substance abuse treatment?
Yes c) Do you support legalizing the possession of small amounts of marijuana?
No d) Should a minor accused of a violent crime be prosecuted as an adult?
No e) Do you support the enforcement of federal immigration laws by state and local police?
No f) Do you support delaying the seizure of assets by law enforcement officials until after a conviction?
  g) Other or expanded principles:

We cannot help the people if we don't love the people; we cannot save the people if we don't serve the people. - Cornell West. We need to take an approach that acknowledges people, even criminals, as people and take humane approaches to getting rid of their harmful behavior. Our current system over populates the prisons with people who are mostly black and brown, without attempts at returning them to society; we must change this racist system to one focusing on reducing recidivism and reintroducing people to civil life.

Economic Issues:

Yes a) Do you support government spending as a means of promoting economic growth?
Yes b) Do you support lowering taxes as a means of promoting economic growth?
No c) Do you support reducing government regulations on the private sector?
Yes d) Do you support expanding access to unemployment benefits?
No e) Do you support requiring welfare applicants to pass a drug test in order to receive benefits?
Yes f) Do you support an increase of the minimum wage?
No g) Do you support legalized state-sponsored sports betting in New Jersey?
No h) Do you support a tax on short-term housing rentals in New Jersey?
  i) Other or expanded principles:

We are moving toward a future with excessive automation; we need to approach unemployment acknowledging this issue by taxing automation at a rate equivalent to the job being lost, using that money to reinforce our unemployment system to focus on retraining. There's always work to do, so connecting volunteer work with higher unemployment benefits in a quasi-employee fashion encourages the unemployed to stay working and continue to look for work and training. New Jersey needs a $15 Minimum wage now, with tax breaks for small businesses and nonprofits.

Education Issues:

Yes a) Do you support the national Common Core State Standards initiative?
No b) Do you support state funding for charter schools?
Yes c) Should immigrants unlawfully present in the United States who graduate from New Jersey high schools be eligible for in-state tuition at public universities in New Jersey?
  d) Other or expanded principles:

I support high standards that go beyond Common Core, and I acknowledge that Common Core caters to multiple ways of learning, which is important to nurturing all students. I stand firmly opposed to PARCC and most standardized testing, as it benefits corporations that create and grade those tests, and does not substantively benefit our students.

Environment & Energy Issues:

Yes a) Do you support state funding for the development of renewable energy (e.g. solar, wind, thermal)?
Yes b) Do you support state funding for open space preservation?
Yes c) Do you support government regulations of greenhouse gas emissions?
  d) Other or expanded principles:

We must transition all state buildings to 100% renewable energy by 2030 and work hard to transition our power plants to 100% renewable by between 2030 and 2035. We can utilize solar, wind, off-shore wind and tidal, and thermal energy to do this. Further, we must remove the limit on the amount of energy homes can produce so that the public can participate in the transition to 100% renewable energy for power plants.

Gun Issues:

Yes a) Do you generally support gun-control legislation?
Yes b) Should background checks be required on gun sales between private citizens at gun shows?
Yes c) Should citizens be allowed to carry concealed guns?
Yes d) Should a license be required for gun possession?
  e) Other or expanded principles:

I do believe in the 2nd Amendment's right to bear arms, however there are ways we should approach it responsibly. People ought to be able to protect themselves without risking major harm. I support smart gun technology that only allows the owner of the firearm to use it.

Health Issues:

Yes a) Do you support a universally-accessible, publicly-administered health insurance option?
Yes b) Do you support Medicaid expansion under the Affordable Care Act ("Obamacare")?
No c) Do you support requiring individuals to purchase health care insurance?
Yes d) Do you support allowing doctors to prescribe marijuana to their patients for medicinal purposes?
  e) Other or expanded principles:

I support a universal single-payer medicare-for-all system. It will save money long-term, allow a far greater standard of living, and resolve many of the addiction issues plaguing our state. Imagine a state that has destigmatized mental health and addiction treatment by bringing it into the fold of traditional healthcare coverage; that is the future we must work toward.

Social Issues:

Yes a) Do you support same-sex marriage?
Yes b) Do you support the inclusion of sexual orientation in New Jersey's anti-discrimination laws?
Yes c) Do you support the inclusion of gender identity in New Jersey's anti-discrimination laws?
  d) Other or expanded principles:

I am an LGBTQIA Activist, of course I support these policies.
