Mike Hunter (Republican) is the Attorney General of Oklahoma. Hunter was appointed on February 20, 2017.
Hunter succeeded Scott Pruitt (R), who served from January 2011 to February 2017.
Hunter ran for election to a full term in the Republican primary on June 26, 2018. He advanced to the primary runoff on August 28, 2018, defeating Gentner Drummond (R) by 271 votes. Hunter won the general election on November 6, 2018, defeating Mark Myles (D) with 64 percent of the vote.
Hunter previously served as Oklahoma Secretary of State from October 2016 to February 2017 and from 1999 to 2002. He also served in the Oklahoma House of Representatives from 1984 to 1990.
Hunter worked as an energy and real estate attorney in private practice before serving as the general counsel for the Oklahoma Corporation Commission from 1993 to 1994. The following year, he transitioned to the role of chief of staff and legal counsel to former Congressman J.C. Watts Jr. (R-Okla.), where he served until 1999. He went on to serve as Oklahoma secretary of state from 1999 to 2002.
From 2002 through 2009, Hunter worked as the executive vice president and chief operating officer of the American Council of Life Insurers. He then served as the secretary of Oklahoma's Commissioners of the Land Office. Hunter went on to work as the chief operating officer of the American Bankers Association (ABA) from 2010 to January 2015 before joining the law firm of Williams & Jensen as counsel in Washington, D.C.
Hunter was named Oklahoma's first assistant attorney general in June 2015. In November 2015, he became Oklahoma secretary of state and special counsel to Governor Mary Fallin (R). In February 2017, Fallin appointed Hunter to the position of Oklahoma attorney general following former officeholder Scott Pruitt's confirmation as head of the Environmental Protection Agency.
