Alaska's sixteenth state senate district is represented by Republican Senator Gary Stevens.

As of the 2010 census, a total of 37,696 civilians reside within Alaska's sixteenth state senate district. Alaska state senators represent an average of 35,512 residents. After the 2000 Census, each member represented 31,347 residents.

About the office

Members of the Alaska State Senate serve four-year terms and are not subject to term limits. Half of the senate is up for re-election every two years. All seats are up for election after redistricting occurs. Up until 1992, members of the Senate and House were elected to both single-member and multi-member districts. Since then, all Alaska legislators have been elected into single-member districts. The terms of Alaska legislators begin on the 4th Monday of the January following a November election.

Qualifications

Article II, Section 2 of the Alaska Constitution states: "A member of the legislature shall be a qualified voter who has been a resident of Alaska for at least three years and of the district from which elected for at least one year, immediately preceding his filing for office. A senator shall be at least twenty-five years of age."

If there is a vacancy in the senate, the Governor is responsible for selecting a replacement. The Governor must select the replacement within 30 days after the vacancy happened. The Governor cannot appoint a replacement if the vacancy happens before a new legislative session is schedule to convene.

Elections for the office of Alaska State Senate will take place in 2020. The general election will be held on November 3, 2020. A primary is scheduled for August 18, 2020. The filing deadline is June 1, 2020.

2016

Elections for the Alaska State Senate took place in 2016. The primary election took place on August 16, 2016, and the general election was held on November 8, 2016. The candidate filing deadline was June 1, 2016.

2014

Elections for the Alaska State Senate took place in 2014. A primary election took place on August 19, 2014. The general election was held on November 4, 2014. The signature filing deadline for candidates wishing to run in this election was June 2, 2014. Robert "Moose" Henrichs was unopposed in the Democratic primary, while District R incumbent Gary Lee Stevens was unopposed in the Republican primary. Stevens defeated Henrichs in the general election.

2012

Egan was the only member of the Alaska State Senate who was not up for re-election in 2012. Ordinarily, half (10) of Alaska's senators would have been up for election in 2012, and half would be up for election in 2014. Alaska senators serve staggered four-year terms. However in 2012, every senator except Egan faced re-election due to substantial changes resulting from 2011 redistricting. Dennis Egan was displaced by redistricting to District P. With the exception of Egan, senators scheduled for the 2014 election were elected to two-year terms in 2012, preserving Alaska's staggered Senate elections.
