Wisconsin's thirty-third state senate district is represented by Republican Senator Chris Kapenga.
Wisconsin state senators represent an average of 172,333 residents. After the 2000 Census, each member represented 162,536 residents.
Members of the Wisconsin State Senate serve four-year terms and are not subject to term limits. Half of the senate is up for election every two years. Wisconsin legislators assume office the first Monday in January following the election.
Section 6 of Article 4 of the Wisconsin Constitution states, "No person shall be eligible to the legislature who shall not have resided one year within the state, and be a qualified elector in the district which he may be chosen to represent."

In the event of a vacancy in the senate, the Governor must call for a special election when allowed by law. Special elections to fill legislative vacancies cannot be held after February 1st preceding a spring election or September 1st preceding a fall election. If the vacancy happens before May 15th, the Governor must fill the vacancy as soon as possible.
Elections for the office of Wisconsin State Senate will take place in 2020. The general election will be held on November 3, 2020. A primary is scheduled for August 11, 2020. The filing deadline is June 1, 2020.

Sherryll Shaddock was unopposed in the Democratic primary, while Chris Kapenga defeated Brian Dorow and Mikael Langner in the Republican primary on June 23. Kapenga defeated Shaddock in the special election on July 21.

Zipperer resigned his seat effective August 5, 2012 in order to become Gov. Scott Walker's deputy chief of staff and senior legal counsel. Farrow won the special election for Wisconsin State Senate District 33. Farrow defeated fellow state Rep. Chris Kapenga (R) in the Republican primary on November 6. No Democrats filed for the seat, thus Farrow easily won the general election on December 4.
