Policy Positions

Idaho State Legislative Election 2018 Political Courage Test

Abortion & Reproductive

1. Do you generally support pro-choice or pro-life legislation?
- Pro-life

2. Should abortion be legal when the pregnancy resulted from incest or rape?
- No Answer

3. Do you support the prohibition of public funds for organizations that perform abortions?
- Yes

4. Other or expanded principles
- Idaho Statute 18-608 states that abortion may be legal if the pregnancy resulted from incest or rape.

Budget, Spending, & Tax

Budget Stabilization:

Indicate which proposals you support (if any) for balancing Idaho's budget.

1. Reducing state employee salaries AND/OR pensions?
- No

2. Instituting mandatory furloughs AND/OR layoffs for state employees?
- No

3. Reducing benefits for Medicaid recipients?
- Yes

4. An income tax increase on any tax bracket?
- No

5. Other or expanded principles
- There is support to repeal the sales tax on groceries. I feel the tax should only be eliminated on real food items and not on pre-processed and Junk foods that have no nutritional value. We must remember that those who receive food stamps do not pay sales tax on the items they purchase with SNAP benefits. Also, allowing only nutritional foods will help cut down on medicaid costs.

Campaign Finance & Government Reform

1. Do you support any limits on campaign contributions to state candidates?
- No Answer

2. Do you support the regulation of indirect campaign contributions from corporations and unions?
- No Answer

3. Do you support the use of an independent AND/OR bipartisan commission for redistricting?
- Yes

4. Do you support requiring a government-issued photo identification in order to vote at the polls?
- Yes

5. Other or expanded principles
- I am serving as the Co-Chairman of Idaho's Campaign Finance Committee. At this time our committee is studying our campaign finance laws. It is not proper for me to comment on the issues before the committee makes its final recommendations.

Crime & Public Safety

- Yes

2. Do you support the legalization of marijuana for recreational purposes?

- Yes

5. Do you support the legalization of Cannabidiol Oil (CBD) for medical purposes?
- Yes

6. Do you support prohibiting the use of handheld electronic devices while operating a motor vehicle?
- Yes

7. Other or expanded principles
- Older minors who commit violent crimes should be prosecuted as adults.

Economic

1. Do you support state government spending as a means of promoting economic growth?

- Yes

3. Do you support reducing state government regulations on the private sector?

- No

4. Should elementary students' reading test scores influence teachers' pay raises?
- No

5. Other or expanded principles
- If students from Idaho want to attend college in another state they must pay out of state tuition. So student residents of another country should not receive state resident tuition.

Environment & Energy

3. Do you support requiring individuals to purchase health care insurance?
- No

4. Do you support legislation that grants citizens the right to choose to die through euthanasia?
- No

5. Do you support eliminating religious exemptions for vaccinations?
- Yes

6. Other or expanded principles
- After the November election we will know how Idaho citizens feel about Medicaid expansion. Then the Governor and Legislature can make decisions on this issue. In our state it is not only the overuse of opioids but all illegal drugs that is increasing our prison population. We are working to find ways to combat this addiction that ruins lives and families. We have increased treatment dollars and are increasing supervision of those leaving prison to help them adjust to productive lives in the community.

2. Do you support the inclusion of gender identity in Idaho's anti-discrimination laws?
- No

3. Do you support greater efforts by Idaho state government in closing the pay gap between men and women?
- No Answer

4. Other or expanded principles
- Women make choices to care for their children and this affects their workforce experiences. I feel Idaho is quite fair in closing the pay gap. More women are entering Law School and other occupations that used to be dominated by men. They also have a tendancy to choose lower paying jobs because of the need to care for their children. Flexible schedules and less travel time away from family is important to women in Idaho.
