A report on State Rep. Robin Shackleford's 'School Listening Tour'

Mar. 30, 2015

Stonybrook Intermediate Academy & Stonybrook Middle School On March 13, Representative Shackleford received a warm welcome from Stonybrook Intermediate Academy and Middle School to jump-start her 'School Listening Tour.' During the visit, the schools shared how they are "two communities in one building". Although they are two different entities, each school shares a value in promoting CORE (civility, order, respect, excellence). Stonybrook Intermediate and Middle School explained many highlights and goals. For instance, to increase interaction opportunities with parents and guardians, the schools incorporated text message and email correspondence. Academically, teachers and administrators have innovated new ways to improve reading and math scores. The schools host family literacy nights. The last family event had approximately 250 students participate in literacy activities, arts, music, and Zumba. Partnership with Boys & Girls Clubs of Indianapolis and grant assistance from 21st Century helps provide after-school tutoring and transportation accommodations. As a result of innovating programming, school suspensions have decreased and school grades have improved. Warren Central High School & Walker Career Center On March 13, Representative Shackleford also visited Warren Central High School and Walker Career Center. During the tour, Representative Shackleford observed how Warren Central and Walker Career are setting the foundations for their students to be college and career ready. Not only are students dedicated to learning in the classroom, they are dedicated to community engagement through numerous activities. Warren Central and Walker Center have college and career ready standards to make sure students are able to be competitive for 21st century jobs. Every student is assigned a Chromebook each school year that is treated as a textbook. The classrooms are designed to have collaborative teamwork and technology activities. Warren Central and Walker Career have student-run broadcast and telecast services that air daily. Earlier this year, the schools received a broadcast set donated from WISH-TV. Additionally, Warren Career students provide low-cost dental, cosmetology, and building trade services to the community.
