On July 5, 2018, Rao retweeted a link to a New York Times op-ed written by Emory University philosophy professor George Yancy titled, Should I Give Up on White People?, with commentary indicating that she had done so. In an interview with Colorado Politics, Rao stated that she stood by her tweet: "It’s incumbent on white people and not people of color to solve it." Rao added that she had personally experienced racism while living in Virginia, New York City, and Colorado.
