Policy Positions

Oklahoma State Legislative Election 2018 Political Courage Test

Abortion & Reproductive

1. Do you generally support pro-choice or pro-life legislation?
- No Answer

2. Should abortion be legal when the pregnancy resulted from incest or rape?
- Yes

3. Do you support the prohibition of public funds for organizations that perform abortions?
- Yes

4. Other or expanded principles
- When asked if I am pro-life or pro-choice I tell people that I am pro-safety. You can make it illegal but you won't keep it from happening. That being the case, keep it legal. Keep it safe. Otherwise, you might lose the mother as well as the child.

Budget, Spending, & Tax

Budget Stabilization:

Indicate which proposals you support (if any) for balancing Oklahoma's budget.

1. Reducing state employee salaries AND/OR pensions?
- No

2. Instituting mandatory furloughs AND/OR layoffs for state employees?
- No

3. Reducing benefits for Medicaid recipients?
- No

4. An income tax increase on any tax bracket?
- Yes

5. Selling the Grand River Dam Authority?
- No Answer

6. Other or expanded principles
- I will admit that I do not know that much about the Grand River Dam Authority. I need more information before making a decision on this issue.

Campaign Finance & Government Reform

1. Do you support any limits on campaign contributions to state candidates?
- Yes

2. Do you support the regulation of indirect campaign contributions from corporations and unions?
- No

3. Do you support the use of an independent AND/OR bipartisan commission for redistricting?
- No

4. Do you support requiring a government-issued photo identification in order to vote at the polls?
- No

5. Other or expanded principles
- C. I know of a case where even though the lines drawn for redistricting seemed odd the lines were drawn to help fund and protect the Southern Oklahoma Resource Center. What that state representative did was noble. D. My mother is 95 years old. She can no longer drive but that shouldn't prohibit her from voting. Requiring a government issued ID is discriminatory to many citizens.

Crime & Public Safety

1. Do you support capital punishment for certain crimes?
- Yes

2. Do you support the legalization of marijuana for recreational purposes?
- No Answer

3. Should a minor accused of a violent crime be prosecuted as an adult?
- Yes

4. Do you support the enforcement of federal immigration laws by state and local police?
- Yes

5. Other or expanded principles
- B. This should be decided by a vote of the people. Even though the use of medical marijuana has already been decided by the voters of Oklahoma I do support their decision. After all, aspirin originated from the bark of willow trees. The Mayans in Central America chew lemon leaves to keep sugar diabetes under control and the Willoq tribe in Peru chew coca leaves to prevent them from getting altitude sickness.

Economic

1. Do you support state government spending as a means of promoting economic growth?
- No

2. Do you support lowering state taxes as a means of promoting economic growth?
- No

3. Do you support reducing state government regulations on the private sector?
- No

4. Do you support expanding access to unemployment benefits?
- Yes

5. Do you support requiring welfare applicants to pass a drug test in order to receive benefits?
- No

6. Do you support an increase of the minimum wage of Oklahoma?
- Yes

7. Other or expanded principles
- Define welfare. I have a neighbor who is in his late 50's who has been on disability all of his life. He has been using marijuana longer than I have known him. His disability is not a physical disability. His is a mental disability. He grew up at the Southern Oklahoma Resource Center. He cannot hold a steady job. Never could hold a steady job. If you cut off his state and federal assistance then he would starve to death. That's why I say, "Define welfare."

Education

1. Do you support adopting federal education standards in Oklahoma?
- Yes

2. Do you support state funding for charter schools?
- No

3. Should immigrants unlawfully present in the United States who graduate from Oklahoma high schools be eligible for in-state tuition at public universities?
- Yes

4. Do you support increasing funding for the state education budget?
- Yes

5. Other or expanded principles
- As far as item C listed above is concerned, I have taught students who may possibly have been illegal and they worked hard to achieve diplomas. The United States is supposed to be a land of opportunities. Their parents are hard working poor people and their children work hard as well. I can think of one student I have had in the past who carried at least a 3.75 grade point average. He went on to college and to say that he became a productive citizen is an understatement. We need more people like him.

Environment & Energy

1. Do you support state funding for the development of renewable energy (e.g. solar, wind, thermal)?
- No

2. Do you support state government regulations of greenhouse gas emissions?
- Yes

3. Do you support increasing state funding for clean drinking water initiatives?
- Yes

4. Do you support increased regulations on the hydraulic fracturing ("fracking") industry?
- Yes

5. Other or expanded principles
- Each electrical coop in the state can tell you to the cent how much revenue they pay in taxes to each school district in their region. I believe in clean, renewable energy but I also believe that those companies should pay their fair share as well. As far as fracking is concerned, this process has caused Oklahoma to have more earthquakes than any other state in the nation. These earthquakes are man made. The people who cause them should be made accountable for the damages they have done to people's homes.

Gun

1. Do you generally support gun-control legislation?
- Yes

2. Should background checks be required on gun sales between private citizens at gun shows?
- Yes

3. Should teachers be allowed to bring guns into the classroom?
- No

4. Should a license be required for gun ownership?
- Yes

5. Other or expanded principles
- Looking back over the 31 years I spent in the classroom, the two most violent incidents that occurred literally blew up in my face. In the first incident a student started throwing desks at another student across the classroom from him. In the 2nd incident a student whipped out a knife and stabbed another student standing right in front of me. I got control of both incidents without any severe injuries. From experience I can honestly say that you do not throw gasoline on a fire to put it out. There is no place in schools for guns.

Health

1. Should the state government increase funding for treatment facilities to combat opioid abuse?
- Yes

2. Do you support Medicaid expansion through Oklahoma's health care programs?
- Yes

3. Do you support requiring individuals to purchase health care insurance?
- Yes

4. Do you support legislation that grants citizens the right to choose to die through euthanasia?
- Yes

5. Do you support eliminating religious exemptions for vaccinations?
- Yes

6. Other or expanded principles
- No Answer

Social

1. Do you support the inclusion of sexual orientation in Oklahoma's anti-discrimination laws?
- Yes

2. Do you support the inclusion of gender identity in Oklahoma's anti-discrimination laws?
- No Answer

3. Do you support greater efforts by Oklahoma state government in closing the pay gap between men and women?
- Yes

4. Other or expanded principles
- I'm not sure I understand what you are asking in item B.

Legislative Priorities

In the following area, please explain in a total of 100 words or less, your top two or three priorities if elected. If they require additional funding for implementation, please explain how you would obtain this funding.
- 1. Funding public schools for excellence2. Bringing the state budget out of the hole.3. Protecting our rural hospitals from closing. Expand medicaid. One more. 4. School safety. I don't want to ever hear of another school shooting.
