Policy Positions

Michigan State Legislative Election 2018 Political Courage Test

Abortion & Reproductive

1. Do you generally support pro-choice or pro-life legislation?
- Pro-choice

2. Should abortion be legal when the pregnancy resulted from incest or rape?
- Yes

3. Do you support the prohibition of public funds for organizations that perform abortions?
- No

4. Other or expanded principles
- Public funds would include medicaid and medicare. I believe there are wonderful organizations that may perform abortions as one small part of their services and they should still be able to receive funds for the other services they perform which constitute the majority of their services. We should be stressing and investing in strong sexual education and making sure everyone has affordable access to birth control if we want to reduce the number of unplanned pregnancies.

Budget, Spending, & Tax

Budget Stabilization:

Indicate which proposals you support (if any) for balancing Michigan's budget.

1. Reducing state employee salaries AND/OR pensions?
- No

2. Instituting mandatory furloughs AND/OR layoffs for state employees?
- No

3. Reducing benefits for Medicaid recipients?
- No

4. An income tax increase on any tax bracket?
- Yes

5. Other or expanded principles
- I would never want to increase taxes on our struggling middle class or lower families. However, I do believe that we should ensure that everyone is paying their fair share of taxes to lessen the burden on our hard-working families.

Campaign Finance & Government Reform

1. Do you support any limits on campaign contributions to state candidates?
- Yes

2. Do you support the regulation of indirect campaign contributions from corporations and unions?
- Yes

3. Do you support the use of an independent AND/OR bipartisan commission for redistricting?
- Yes

4. Do you support requiring a government-issued photo identification in order to vote at the polls?
- No

5. Other or expanded principles
- I do believe that we have undue influence of big money in our elections and would support limiting contributions from corporate pacs. I strongly support taking redistricting out of the hands of legislators to avoid bias. I believe that our current voter ID laws make voting too restrictive and we should find a better way to ensure integrity in our elections.

Crime & Public Safety

1. Do you support capital punishment for certain crimes?
- No

2. Do you support the legalization of marijuana for recreational purposes?
- Yes

3. Should a minor accused of a violent crime be prosecuted as an adult?
- No

4. Do you support the enforcement of federal immigration laws by state and local police?
- No

5. Other or expanded principles
- I believe we are in need of serious reforms to our criminal justice system to ensure we keep our citizens safe without taking away people's civil rights. I also believe in a rehabilitative approach to maximize potential in our society.

Economic

1. Do you support state government spending as a means of promoting economic growth?
- Yes

2. Do you support lowering state taxes as a means of promoting economic growth?
- Yes

3. Do you support reducing state government regulations on the private sector?
- No

4. Do you support expanding access to unemployment benefits?
- Yes

5. Do you support requiring welfare applicants to pass a drug test in order to receive benefits?
- No

6. Do you support an increase of the minimum wage of Michigan?
- Yes

7. Do you support increasing state funding for improving Michigan's roads and bridges?
- Yes

8. Do you support eliminating Michigan's mandatory no-fault auto insurance?
- Yes

9. Other or expanded principles
- In theory reducing taxes to spur economic growth sounds good but we need to be clear who we are reducing taxes on and ensuring everyone pays their fair share. We also need to recognize that reducing government regulations should be limited to those that are redundant or no longer necessary but we should keep those that are essential to protecting people. I would support eliminating no-fault with the right plan in place to ensure that people are protected in auto accidents.

Education

1. Do you support adopting federal education standards in Michigan?
- No

2. Do you support state funding for charter schools?
- No

3. Should immigrants unlawfully present in the United States who graduate from Michigan high schools be eligible for in-state tuition at public universities?
- Yes

4. Other or expanded principles
- I would need to know that the federal education standards ensured the best possible education for our children before agreeing to adopt them. I do not support public funds going to private or for-profit schools. If public funds go to charter schools, then those schools should be held to the same standards and provide the same services as any other public school.Children who live their whole lives and graduate from our schools should not be punished for being brought here likely without them having any say in where they live.

Environment & Energy

1. Do you support state funding for the development of renewable energy (e.g. solar, wind, thermal)?
- Yes

2. Do you support state government regulations of greenhouse gas emissions?
- Yes

3. Do you support increasing state funding for clean drinking water initiatives?
- Yes

4. Do you support decommissioning the Enbridge Line 5 pipeline, which carries oil from Canada to the U.S.?
- Yes

5. Other or expanded principles
- Moving to clean renewable energy is the responsible decision to be making at a crucial time in the change of climate. We should be moving in that direction quickly and creating good paying jobs in the process.Protecting Michigan's water should be one of our biggest priorities. It is unacceptable in the state with over 20% of the world's fresh water to allow it to be contaminated. No one in our state should worry that the water coming out of their taps is not safe and healthy.

Gun

1. Do you generally support gun-control legislation?
- Yes

2. Should background checks be required on gun sales between private citizens at gun shows?
- Yes

3. Should teachers be allowed to bring guns into the classroom?
- No

4. Should a license be required for gun ownership?
- Yes

5. Other or expanded principles
- I fully support our 2nd amendment. I myself have been a gun owner and many in my family are as well with a long history of being sporstmen and women. That is why it is important to me that we have common sense gun laws that protect our families and respect individual rights.

Health

1. Should the state government increase funding for treatment facilities to combat opioid abuse?
- Yes

2. Do you support Medicaid expansion through Michigan's health care programs?
- Yes

3. Do you support requiring individuals to purchase health care insurance?
- No

4. Do you support legislation that grants citizens the right to choose to die through euthanasia?
- Yes

5. Do you support eliminating religious exemptions for vaccinations?
- No

6. Do you support using state funds to provide public health services to citizens exposed to lead contamination in the Flint Water Crisis?
- Yes

7. Other or expanded principles
- Healthcare is a human right. Making sure everyone has access to healthcare without having to worry about whether or not they can pay is a necessity. As the cost of healthcare and medication continues to rise, it will become a drag on our economy and further restrict access to our citizens. Making sure we have good policy to protect our people and a strong economy benefits everyone.

Social

1. Do you support the inclusion of sexual orientation in Michigan's anti-discrimination laws?
- Yes

2. Do you support the inclusion of gender identity in Michigan's anti-discrimination laws?
- Yes

3. Do you support greater efforts by Michigan state government in closing the pay gap between men and women?
- Yes

4. Should able-bodied "food stamps" (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) recipients meet a work requirement to be eligible for benefits?
- No

5. Other or expanded principles
- We believe these truths to be self-evident. That everyone is born with the inalienable right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. This means we should be ensuring everyone's rights are protected. Equal pay for equal work is long overdue and essential in a society where women are often the main breadwinners as happens today. Most people who currently receive snap benefits already work. These work requirements are not necessary and enforcing them will cost our state millions.

Legislative Priorities

In the following area, please explain in a total of 100 words or less, your top two or three priorities if elected. If they require additional funding for implementation, please explain how you would obtain this funding.
- My top 3 priorities for Michigan are education, healthcare access, and infrastructure. These fundamental issues are crucial to our ability as a state to thrive and prosper. We have allowed our state to go to the bottom of the scales in this country on these issues and it is hurting all of us. If we want to bring in new businesses and create new business in our state we need to make these important investments in our future. We begin by making sure the money that should be in the school aid fund is put back there.
