Policy Positions

Nevada State Legislative Election 2018 Political Courage Test

Abortion & Reproductive

1. Do you generally support pro-choice or pro-life legislation?
- Pro-choice

2. Should abortion be legal when the pregnancy resulted from incest or rape?
- Yes

3. Do you support the prohibition of public funds for organizations that perform abortions?
- No

4. Other or expanded principles
- Anti-abortion proponents are generally but secretly fine with abortion as long as they can control women, as in the recent case of Brett Kavanaugh. Kavanaugh approved of forcing disabled women to have abortions against their will.

Budget, Spending, & Tax

Budget Stabilization:

Indicate which proposals you support (if any) for balancing Nevada's budget.

1. Reducing state employee salaries AND/OR pensions?
- No

2. Instituting mandatory furloughs AND/OR layoffs for state employees?
- No

3. Reducing benefits for Medicaid recipients?
- No

4. Other or expanded principles
- Revising our property tax structure is one way to bring in more revenue for infrastructure, schools, fire protection and law enforcement - all the things property tax revenues are meant to fund, but do not due to Nevada's depreciation-style property tax. Businesses who come into Nevada must also have an investment in the communities where they plan to build - we can't continue to give multi-million dollar tax incentives and then expect Nevada residents to pay for it.

Campaign Finance & Government Reform

1. Do you support any limits on campaign contributions to state candidates?
- Yes

2. Do you support the regulation of indirect campaign contributions from corporations and unions?
- Yes

3. Do you support the use of an independent AND/OR bipartisan commission for redistricting?
- Yes

4. Do you support requiring a government-issued photo identification in order to vote at the polls?
- No

5. Other or expanded principles
- I think candidates are required to spend too much time fundraising, rather than connecting with voters and educating people on the issues. And once in office, many candidates are beholden to the corporate entities who funded their campaigns, and not to the residents of their state. I think lots of candidates begin their careers with the right intentions, but then get caught up in the money side of things, losing sight of what's really important - their constituents.

Crime & Public Safety

1. Do you support capital punishment for certain crimes?
- No

2. Do you support the legalization of marijuana for recreational purposes?
- Yes

3. Should a minor accused of a violent crime be prosecuted as an adult?
- No

4. Do you support the enforcement of federal immigration laws by state and local police?
- No

5. Other or expanded principles
- No Answer

Economic

1. Do you support state government spending as a means of promoting economic growth?
- No

2. Do you support lowering state taxes as a means of promoting economic growth?
- No

3. Do you support reducing state government regulations on the private sector?
- No

4. Do you support expanding access to unemployment benefits?
- Yes

5. Do you support requiring welfare applicants to pass a drug test in order to receive benefits?
- No

6. Do you support an increase of the minimum wage of Nevada?
- Yes

7. Other or expanded principles
- No Answer

Education

1. Do you support adopting federal education standards in Nevada?
- No

2. Do you support state funding for charter schools?
- No

3. Should immigrants unlawfully present in the United States who graduate from Nevada high schools be eligible for in-state tuition at public universities?
- Yes

4. Other or expanded principles
- Current 'Common Core' educational standards don't have the effect they were meant to. I don't support any measure that takes critical thinking, creativity, and individual thought out of public education. Funding charter schools with public education funds thins the funding pool. None of these measures actually addresses the root of the education issue. Students who attend Nevada schools should all be allowed to attend our state higher education institutions, regardless of their resident status - DREAMers ought not to be penalized for living and working here through no fault of their own.

Environment & Energy

1. Do you support state funding for the development of renewable energy (e.g. solar, wind, thermal)?
- Yes

2. Do you support state government regulations of greenhouse gas emissions?
- Yes

3. Do you support increasing state funding for clean drinking water initiatives?
- Yes

4. Do you support increasing state funding to improve air quality?
- Yes

5. Other or expanded principles
- Anything states can do to increase their clean energy and RPS will help reduce carbon emissions and mitigate climate change. Because of the reluctance of federal government to take the matter seriously, it is up to the states to take measures to protect the environment, and protect their residents from the devastating effects of climate change.

Gun

1. Do you generally support gun-control legislation?
- Yes

2. Should background checks be required on gun sales between private citizens at gun shows?
- Yes

3. Should teachers be allowed to bring guns into the classroom?
- No

4. Should a license be required for gun ownership?
- Yes

5. Other or expanded principles
- No Answer

Health

1. Should the state government increase funding for treatment facilities to combat opioid abuse?
- Yes

2. Do you support Medicaid expansion through Nevada's health care programs?
- Yes

3. Do you support requiring individuals to purchase health care insurance?
- No

4. Do you support legislation that grants citizens the right to choose to die through euthanasia?
- Yes

5. Do you support eliminating religious exemptions for vaccinations?
- No

6. Do you support increasing state funding for community health emergency preparation?
- Yes

7. Other or expanded principles
- In all areas of healthcare we are failing our citizenry. We shouldn't be in constant fear of losing everything if there's a medical emergency, a situation many middle and lower income families find themselves in. We must level the playing field and ensure every American has access to affordable, accessible, and quality healthcare. Many people don't have employer based insurance, many people don't qualify for Medicaid, and those people are left out. Insurance rates have skyrocketed, making even discounted group insurance unaffordable.

Social

1. Do you support the inclusion of sexual orientation in Nevada's anti-discrimination laws?
- Yes

2. Do you support the inclusion of gender identity in Nevada's anti-discrimination laws?
- Yes

3. Do you support greater efforts by Nevada state government in closing the pay gap between men and women?
- Yes

4. Other or expanded principles
- The fact that women still make less money than men for substantially similar work is outrageous. This practice impacts women of color and trans women at higher rates than other women, and contributes to constant cycles of poverty. If we are to thrive as a nation, every American has to be treated equally and humanely, and not just on paper but in the real world.

Legislative Priorities

In the following area, please explain in a total of 100 words or less, your top two or three priorities if elected. If they require additional funding for implementation, please explain how you would obtain this funding.
- Education: increase per-student funding by regaining marijuana revenues dispatched to the Rainy Day Fund. Our students deserve a top-notch education and Nevada deserves an educated and informed citizenry. That will impact every sector of our state, improving and and strengthening our economy, our diversity, and our safety.
