Thomas E. "Tommy" Pope (b. July 24, 1962) is a Republican member of the South Carolina House of Representatives, representing District 47. He was first elected to the chamber in 2010.
Pope was a candidate in the 2017 special election to represent South Carolina's 5th Congressional District. He was defeated by Ralph Norman in the Republican primary runoff on May 16, 2017, by a margin of just 203 votes with 35,307 votes cast. If the official vote count shows less than a one percent difference between the two candidates, as the unofficial results did as of the morning of May 17, the results will automatically trigger a recount by the state of South Carolina. In the May 2 primary two weeks earlier, Pope edged Norman by 135 votes as the two advanced to the runoff.
Pope currently serves as Speaker Pro Tempore, a position he has held since 2015.
Pope received his B.S. from the University of South Carolina in 1984. He also earned his J.D. from USC in 1987.

Reason for Seeking Public Office:
When I left the Solicitor's Office, I thought I was done with public service. But after watching politicians drive our state and our nation into the ground, I know that proven and energetic conservatives must take a stand. I'm running for State House because we need a reformer who is willing to do the hard work it takes to change government, rebuild our economy and create jobs.
