Policy Positions

Nevada State Legislative Election 2018 Political Courage Test

Abortion & Reproductive

1. Do you generally support pro-choice or pro-life legislation?
- Pro-choice

2. Should abortion be legal when the pregnancy resulted from incest or rape?
- Yes

3. Do you support the prohibition of public funds for organizations that perform abortions?
- No

4. Other or expanded principles
- Funds for Planned Parenthood should not be cut off because a few clinics also offer abortion services. Beside, Planned Parenthood is only reimbursed for services performed. Federal law already disallows funds to be used to perform abortions.

Budget, Spending, & Tax

Budget Stabilization:

Indicate which proposals you support (if any) for balancing Nevada's budget.

1. Reducing state employee salaries AND/OR pensions?
- No

2. Instituting mandatory furloughs AND/OR layoffs for state employees?
- No

3. Reducing benefits for Medicaid recipients?
- No

4. Other or expanded principles
- Everyone should participate in efforts to support our State's budget. Teachers and State workers should not bear the brunt of this. After all, Governor Quinn gave rebates to all when we had a surplus, not just to teachers and State employees. Re: professional athletic facilities, these should be funded mainly with private funds.

Campaign Finance & Government Reform

1. Do you support any limits on campaign contributions to state candidates?
- Yes

2. Do you support the regulation of indirect campaign contributions from corporations and unions?
- Yes

3. Do you support the use of an independent AND/OR bipartisan commission for redistricting?
- Yes

4. Do you support requiring a government-issued photo identification in order to vote at the polls?
- No

5. Other or expanded principles
- First time registered voters do need some form of identification but it is not necessary after that. If someone has voted for years in a district, this makes no sense. Fraud in voting is so minuscule the cost and time is not needed at this time.

Crime & Public Safety

1. Do you support capital punishment for certain crimes?
- No

2. Do you support the legalization of marijuana for recreational purposes?
- Yes

3. Should a minor accused of a violent crime be prosecuted as an adult?
- Yes

4. Do you support the enforcement of federal immigration laws by state and local police?
- No

5. Other or expanded principles
- Re: a minor accused of a violent crime - this should be on a case by case basis. Since ICE is responsible for this, our state and local police should be focused on criminal activity. If an undocumented person commits the crime, then ICE involvement may be appropriate. Our state and local police already are shorthanded.

Economic

1. Do you support state government spending as a means of promoting economic growth?
- Yes

2. Do you support lowering state taxes as a means of promoting economic growth?
- No

3. Do you support reducing state government regulations on the private sector?
- Yes

4. Do you support expanding access to unemployment benefits?
- No

5. Do you support requiring welfare applicants to pass a drug test in order to receive benefits?
- No

6. Do you support an increase of the minimum wage of Nevada?
- Yes

7. Other or expanded principles
- Yes/no answers need clarification. Having a state economic growth commission is appropriate. Have lowering taxes stimulated economic growth in beneficial ways to communities? Need to study this further. Some state regulations may hinder the private sector and need modification. Assess on a regulation by regulation basis. Drug testing was a waste of money in other states. Livable wages are needed. Housing costs have skyrocketed. Do unemployment benefits need expanding?

Education

1. Do you support adopting federal education standards in Nevada?
- No

2. Do you support state funding for charter schools?
- No

3. Should immigrants unlawfully present in the United States who graduate from Nevada high schools be eligible for in-state tuition at public universities?
- Yes

4. Other or expanded principles
- Federal regulations may be used as a guideline for state standards but not a dictate. No Child Left Behind, left many children behind. Public charter schools meet public needs and must be accountable. Private charter schools should not get public funding. Until we have sensible immigration reform, children who wish to further their education and be productive members of our society should not be punished further.

Environment & Energy

1. Do you support state funding for the development of renewable energy (e.g. solar, wind, thermal)?
- Yes

2. Do you support state government regulations of greenhouse gas emissions?
- Yes

3. Do you support increasing state funding for clean drinking water initiatives?
- Yes

4. Do you support increasing state funding to improve air quality?
- Yes

5. Other or expanded principles
- We need national action to preserve our environment but state action can contribute to our water and air remaining as clean as possible. Polluters should be assessed fees if they do not follow federal or state standards. We all must participate in reducing emissions and keeping our water and air safe. Private sector needs to pay for their actions if they are not meeting state regulations.

Gun

1. Do you generally support gun-control legislation?
- Yes

2. Should background checks be required on gun sales between private citizens at gun shows?
- Yes

3. Should teachers be allowed to bring guns into the classroom?
- No

4. Should a license be required for gun ownership?
- No

5. Other or expanded principles
- I support reasonable gun control legislation. I do not want to take everyone's guns away. At this point in time, I'd like to see background checks implemented as per voter vote. Perhaps in very small rural schools, a gun might be allowed depending on circumstances but it must be voluntary.

Health

1. Should the state government increase funding for treatment facilities to combat opioid abuse?
- No

2. Do you support Medicaid expansion through Nevada's health care programs?
- Yes

3. Do you support requiring individuals to purchase health care insurance?
- No Answer

4. Do you support legislation that grants citizens the right to choose to die through euthanasia?
- Yes

5. Do you support eliminating religious exemptions for vaccinations?
- No

6. Do you support increasing state funding for community health emergency preparation?
- Yes

7. Other or expanded principles
- Again, these questions have yes/no answers that distort answers. Since the cost of drugs seem to have skyrocketed for no reason, I'd like to see makers of opioids participate financially in treatment. I would like to see profit get out of healthcare so I prefer not to support insurance companies. However, until healthcare is reformed, all need to participate in order for it to be effective. We have seen the effects when some are not vaccinated so in order to attend public school, vaccinations need to be mandated.

Social

1. Do you support the inclusion of sexual orientation in Nevada's anti-discrimination laws?
- Yes

2. Do you support the inclusion of gender identity in Nevada's anti-discrimination laws?
- Yes

3. Do you support greater efforts by Nevada state government in closing the pay gap between men and women?
- Yes

4. Other or expanded principles
- We are all equal in the eyes of God so we should be equal in the eyes of our state.

Legislative Priorities

In the following area, please explain in a total of 100 words or less, your top two or three priorities if elected. If they require additional funding for implementation, please explain how you would obtain this funding.
- Education and healthcare are the two main concerns of constituents when I speak with them. My slogan is Working Together for Solutions and it will take all legislators to work together to increase education funding. The marijuana proceeds should go toward this without reducing spending that we already are using to fund education. Healthcare requires federal and state to work on reform together.
