Alonzo Knox was born in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Knox served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1989 to 2006. He earned an A.A. in law enforcement from Southern University of Baton Rouge, a B.A. from Southern University of Baton Rouge in 1995, and an M.B.A. from Trinity University in 2004.
Knox's career experience includes owning Backatown Coffee Parlour and working as a readjustment specialist with the Department of Veterans Affairs . He has been affiliated with Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., the Preservation Resource Center, and the Historic Faubourg Treme Association.
Louisiana elections use the majority-vote system. All candidates compete in the same primary, and a candidate can win the election outright by receiving more than 50 percent of the vote. If no candidate does, the top two vote recipients from the primary advance to the general election, regardless of their partisan affiliation.
