Biden campaign adviser dismisses Trump attack ads on Hunter as a tired conspiracy theory
August 20, 2020Joe Biden's campaign is calling desperate on the president's latest ad blitz, which portrays the former vice president as overly cozy with China and his son as a corrupt profiteer.
Speaking with POLITICO's Jake Sherman and Anna Palmer on Thursday, senior Biden campaign adviser Symone Sanders dismissed the ad as a tired attack that reveals that the Trump campaign's other offensive strategies have failed.
"The Trump campaign is reupping these attacks because they've yet to find anything that sticks," Sanders said. "The Ukraine did not stick. Saying that Vice President Biden was corrupt didn't stick. Saying he's not all the way there didn't stick. So they really haven't found an attack that's been able to penetrate ... down to the American people."
The Trump campaign's latest ad released Thursday focuses on a 2013 trip the Bidens took to Beijing and intersperses clips of Joe Biden promoting Chinese development. It accuses Hunter Biden of using his father's position to garner favorable financial deals. Trump called on China to investigate Hunter Biden last year.
The Bidens have repeatedly denied any wrongdoing associated with the trip. Sanders called the accusations "despicable" and "nothing but salacious lies."
"It's a conspiracy theory cooked up by Rudy Giuliani," Sanders said.
Trump's allies have long gone after Hunter Biden, also accusing him of abusing his father's position for energy dealings in Ukraine. Trump pushed Ukrainian officials to publicly launch an investigation into Hunter Biden, which led to Trump's impeachment last year.
Sanders said a Biden White House would have barriers to make sure no family members profit from his office. She said none of Biden's children would serve in his administration in an indirect jab to Trump, whose daughter Ivanka and son-in-law, Jared Kushner, serve as senior White House advisers.
"A Biden administration will uphold the policies that the Obama-Biden administration as it relates to really ensuring that we're not crossing lines here," Sanders said. "There was a very high ethics bar in the Obama-Biden White House.
