During an interview with 'The Breakfast Club" hosted by radio show host 'Charlamagne Tha God,' former Vice President and 2020 Democratic candidate Joe Biden claimed that black people are not actually black if they vote for President Trump over him in the 2020 election.
“You got more questions but I’ll tell you if you have a problem figuring out whether you’re for me or Trump, then you ain’t black,” Biden said.
The Biden campaign is now responding to backlash by defending the former Vice President from his claim.
Instead of apologizing, senior advisor to the Biden campaign Symone Sanders tried defending the former Vice President by saying that he has a record of “fighting alongside and for the African American community.” She also claimed that the comments were made "in jest."
"Vice President Biden spent his career fighting alongside and for the African American community," Sanders said. "He won his party's nomination by earning every vote and meeting people where they are and that's exactly what he intends to do this November."
She continued: "The comments made at the end of the Breakfast Club interview were in jest, but let’s be clear about what the VP was saying: he was making the distinction that he would put his record with the African American community up against Trump’s any day. Period."
Read the transcript below of what Biden said during the interview:
UNIDENTIFIED VOICE: Thanks so much, that’s really our time I apologize.
CHARLAMAGNE: You can’t do that to black media.
BIDEN: I can do that to white media and black media because my wife has to go on at 6 o’clock. Uh oh, I’m in trouble.
CHARLAMAGNE: Listen, you gotta come see us when you come to New York VP Biden. It’s a long way until November, we got more questions.
BIDEN: You got more questions — well I’ll tell you, if you have a problem figuring out whether you’re for me or Trump, then you ain’t black.
CHARLAMAGNE: It don’t have nothing to do with Trump. It has to do with the fact I want something for my community.
The comment from Biden immediately received harsh backlash online including from several prominent lawmakers on both sides of the isle. One of these lawmakers was Republican Senator Tim Scott of South Carolina.
“1.3 million black Americans already voted for Trump in 2016. This morning, Joe Biden told every single one of us we ‘ain’t black.’ I’d say I’m surprised, but it’s sadly par for the course for Democrats to take the black community for granted and brow beat those that don’t agree,” Scott tweeted.
Scott wasn't the only one to unload on Biden. Donald Trump Jr. tweeted: "Based on @JoeBiden's racist & dehumanizing comments today, I know he thinks he knows more about being black (despite being on the wrong side of every issue that matters to the black community throughout his whole career) than @TimScottSC, but you may want to give this a listen."
Democratic Congressman Vernon Jones unloaded on Biden in this epic video below: "I’ve been black all my life. But I’ve never been anyone’s property, especially not @JoeBiden. You’re not entitled to black support, Joe. You haven’t even earned it."
