On Thursday, Senators will return to the impeachment trial as Democrats continue to try to gather votes to call in more witnesses. According to ABC News however, the Democrats' efforts are failing.
According to the news outlet, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell believes that he has the votes to deny Democrats' witness wishes.
Check out what ABC News reported:
After more than 90 questions and 8 hours of debate on Wednesday, Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has indicated to Republican senators he believes he now has the votes to defeat any Democratic motion that the Senate consider new witnesses when the Senate decides that question on Friday, according to two GOP sources. That would allow him to skip to the final stages of the trial, the sources said.

Multiple Republicans tell ABC News they hope to move quickly to acquit the president within the next two days, ahead of his State of the Union address on Tuesday.
When asked by ABC News reporter Trish Turner if he had the votes to block more witnesses, McConnell said, "We'll see what tomorrow brings."
He was next asked if he felt confident about the vote. McConnell smiled and said, "I always do."
On Wednesday, President Trump's legal team continued to torch Democrats' bogus impeachment allegations, saying that even if the President withheld military aid from Ukraine in exchange for investigations, this wouldn't be an impeachable offense.
“Mere information is not something that would violate the campaign finance laws … it’s not campaign interference for credible information about wrongdoing to be brought to light, if it's credible information,” said White House deputy counsel Patrick Philbin.
Earlier in the week, there was a scare that Republicans would not have the votes to deny witnesses. The Wall Street Journal released report earlier in the week which stated that McConnell's vote count “wasn’t where it needed to be.”

Check out what the Daily Wire reported:
A vote on whether to allow witness testimony is currently scheduled for Friday.
In recent days, several Republicans have expressed a desire to hear from, at least, Bolton, whose new book, “The Room Where It Happened” apparently includes new information linking Trump’s denial of foreign aid to Ukraine with his desire to see Ukrainian officials dig up dirt on former Vice President Joe Biden and his son, Hunter. But those claims are as yet unverified, and White House lawyers, in their closing arguments in the Senate yesterday, cast doubt on Bolton’s credibility as a witness — and on whether such a claim even rises to the level of an impeachable offense.
Separately, reports surfaced that acting White House chief of staff, Mick Mulvaney, could take the witness stand to dispute Bolton’s assertions, giving some Senators, in favor of removing Trump from office, pause.

Reporters however, are suggesting that McConnell is not actually concerned about bringing on additional witnesses to the trial as he is about how long it drags out for.
"I’m at the Senate and it’s clear to me, based on background conversations with several GOP senators, that McConnell is wary of calling witnesses and doesn’t want the trial to get out of control for his party. “Mitch wants this done,” said one of them," tweeted Robert Costa.
Despite the Wall Street Journal's Tuesday evening report, it appears that McConnell feels confident that he can get the votes to end the Senate trial and not call on more witnesses.
“Republicans feel increasingly confident about prevailing,” Politico reported. “In the meeting, critics of hearing from witnesses made a ‘strong’ case against voting for new evidence, according to two attendees. A third attendee who opposes new witnesses said the meeting seemed to solidify the position against new witnesses and documents: ‘I feel good.'”
A “feeling of calm had been restored” with Republicans in the Senate, Politico also said.
