Censure resolution

Jan. 1, 1900

On January 27, 2018, the Texas Republican Executive Committee voted 44-19 for a resolution to censure Straus due to his opposition to items on Gov. Greg Abbott's agenda in the 2017 special session. Chairman James Dickey and Vice Chairwoman Amy Clark supported the censure resolution, which needed a two-thirds vote (43 yeas) in order to pass. The censure resolution, which came from Bexar County, said that Straus "has abused the power of his office and his authority as speaker to usurp the power of the people’s duly elected representatives of the Texas House of Representatives, obstructed the agenda of Governor Abbott, and, taken more than three actions during this current biennium that are in opposition to the core principles of the Republican Party of Texas." After the vote, Dickey said, “Please know, we do not do this lightly, and it does not necessarily reflect any personal opinion on particular details in this discussion. This is us being committed to supporting the convention, the delegates, Republican voters across Texas in unifying our Party to move forward.”
