Louisiana university cancels classes after second fatal shooting within a week
Grambling State University has canceled classes and imposed a curfew after two fatal shootings on the campus within a week, USA Today reported.
University President Rick Gallot said that classes for Monday and Tuesday were canceled and imposed a curfew from 9:30 p.m. to 6 a.m. until further notice.
Gallot also said the university will limit extracurricular activities and non-student access to the campus, citing how “outsiders” have contributed to the problems on campus, according to USA Today.
"Our students come here for an education and far too often it's outsiders who have created these situations that have put life and limb into in danger," Gallot said in a statement. "That's not why we're here. That's not what we're about after 120 years, and so again, our priority is keeping our students safe."
"Right now we're focused on providing support to our students here on campus,” he added.
One person was killed and seven others were wounded in a shooting at a homecoming event on Grambling State University's campus Sunday morning.
Authorities said the shooting occurred at 1:15 a.m. in the quad area of the campus. The person who died in the incident wasn’t enrolled in the school, The Associated Press reported.
That incident came less than a week after another shooting on the university’s campus left one student dead and a 16-year-old juvenile injured.
Louisiana State Police (LSP) has issued an arrest warrant for Jatavious Carroll, 18, in the shooting on Sunday morning.
According to NBC affiliate KTVE, LSP has charged Carroll with one count of second degree murder, one count of attempted second degree murder and a count of possessing a firearm on school property.
