Fix Healthcare
There is one thing every American can agree on - our health care system is broken. The Affordable Care Act is a disaster and now that the individual mandate has finally been repealed, Congress needs to get to work on finding a replacement. As a nurse, who has also worked on the administrative side of hospitals, I know the actual cost of healthcare. We don’t need a big government program that involves federal bureaucrats in your health care decisions. Instead, we need to put patients in charge of their health care decisions, increase competition to lower costs, and make health care pricing more transparent. By doing that we can build the health care system Americans deserve.
National Defense
I’ve spent the last 31 years of my life in the military, so I can tell you two things are absolutely true. We have the most incredible Soldiers, Sailors, Marines, Coast Guardsmen and Airmen in the world, and we are not providing them with the proper funding for training, equipment and supplies they need. We owe it to our service members to fund our military at the level in which they have the latest and greatest equipment to keep them safe. I look at our state of readiness, and I know we’re not doing our best. It’s a national disgrace that persistent continuing resolutions and government shutdowns continue to impede the vital work that our service members need to do to ensure our national defense. Our ships are colliding, our soldiers are overworked, and we don’t spend enough time on training because we are stretched too thin. In Congress, I will fight to ensure our military has the funding and support it needs to protect our freedoms.
Balance the Budget
Congress needs to start acting like adults and start spending the people’s money responsibly and the first step is passing a budget. I’m not sure that I have ever seen the phrase “Continuing Resolution” anywhere in the Constitution, so it’s time to stop this whole, “will they or won’t they fund the government” dance at the end of every year. The constitution is clear, the power of the purse belongs to Congress, and it’s their responsibility to spend your money wisely. That means stopping the irresponsible cycle of “Continuing Resolutions”, the endless deficit spending and the sky rocketing national debt. Congress needs to find solutions instead of continuing to kick the can down the road. Passing a budget, a balanced budget, every year will be one of my top priorities.
Clean up Washington
While I was stationed at the Pentagon, I had a front row seat to the dysfunction in Washington. Every day, members of Congress seemed more interested in scoring political points, and grabbing headlines than in doing what’s right for America. Washington needs to stop bickering, and get to work for the American people. For the past 31 years, I’ve worked in the most diverse organization in the country. We don’t agree on politics or religion or which branch of service is better, but when our country calls, we put aside all those differences and come together for one purpose, to protect this great nation and defend our Constitution. If the million+ members of the military can all do that, then why can’t our 435 representatives in Congress do the same?
We need leaders in Congress willing to stand up to do what’s right. To be a voice for all Americans who are tired of the Congressional failure and dysfunction.
