The superintendent of a Michigan school district says he will undergo cultural sensitivity training after coming under criticism for comments on Facebook about the death of George Floyd.

The Associated Press reported Wednesday that superintendent Brian Metcalf of the Grand Ledge school district informed colleagues that he would undergo the training after parents in the district raised concerns over a Facebook post from Metcalf pointing out that Floyd's death came after he was arrested on suspicion of using a counterfeit bill.

“There is no place for it among the leaders in Grand Ledge schools, who are expected to value diversity and inclusion,” the board said in a statement obtained by the AP. “However, we do not believe the statement reflects his capability to learn and grow from this matter. Superintendent Metcalf has apologized and informed the board that he will be taking sensitivity training.”

Floyd died while in police custody last week. In a video showing his arrest, one now-fired officer kneels on Floyd's neck for several minutes even as he was handcuffed on the ground. That officer, Derek Chauvin, now faces a murder charge.

In a Facebook post, Metcalf reportedly called Floyd's death "wrong," while referring to the police's official explanation that Floyd had been arrested on suspicion of using a counterfeit bill: "It all starts with being a law abiding citizen."

Metcalf apologized for that post in a statement obtained by the AP.

Floyd's death has sparked a wave of protests across the U.S., with thousands of Americans demanding that three other officers seen on video during Floyd's arrest be charged.

“I am deeply sorry for the statement that I posted,” Metcalf said. “As the leader of a school district that seeks to encourage diversity and be welcoming to all, my words fell far short.”
