Michigan is slated to reopen high schools and some indoor entertainment venues amid stabilizing coronavirus rates.

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services updated its epidemic order to allow “indoor activities where Michiganders can remain masked.”

The changes first went into effect in early November in an attempt to control the wave of coronavirus infections in the state.

High schools can reopen for in-person learning and colleges and universities can return for the winter semester, with a voluntary commitment to wait until Jan. 18 to restart in-person courses.

Casinos, bowling alleys and movie theaters can reopen with with total capacity limited to 100 people. Gyms can also remain open for individual exercise, and outdoor group fitness and outdoor non-contact sports will be allowed.

Indoor residential gatherings will still be limited to 10 people and two households, and indoor dining is still closed.

The order goes into effect Monday, and will last until Jan. 15.

Michigan said it saw a 27-day decline in coronavirus infections, which currently sits at 439 per million people.

In addition, there was an 11-day decline in daily positive coronavirus testing, which is currently at 10.6 percent. There has also been a 13-day decline in the percent of hospital beds occupied by COVID-19 patients.

"These past few weeks, Michiganders across the state stepped up and did their part to slow the spread of COVID-19,” Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer (D) said in a statement. “Because of our collective hard work, we are now able to begin the steps to carefully lift some of the protocols we have in place.”

Michigan has seen 454,956 COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began, according to state data. There have been 11,274 deaths.
