Nevada's thirty-fourth state assembly district is represented by Democratic Representative Shannon Bilbray-Axelrod.

As of the 2010 census, a total of 64,461 civilians reside within Nevada's thirty-fourth state assembly district. Nevada state assembly members represent an average of 64,299 residents, as of the 2010 Census. After the 2000 Census, each member represented approximately 47,339 residents.

About the office

Members of the Nevada State Assembly serve two-year terms with term limits. Nevada legislators assume office the day after the election. The Nevada legislature is biennial, convening only in odd-numbered years.

Qualifications

To be eligible to serve in the Nevada State Assembly, a candidate must be:

• 21 years old at the time of the election
• A citizen resident of the State of Nevada for one year preceding this election
• A resident of the district for a period of 30 days next preceding closing date for filing as a candidate

Salaries

The Nevada Constitution specifies that the 63 members of the state Legislature are to be paid for the first 60 days of each regular session, held every other year in odd-numbered years. The pay for the 21 Senators and 42 members of the Assembly is tied to pay increases provided to state employees.

Term limits

The Nevada legislature is one of 15 state legislatures with term limits. Voters enacted the Nevada Term Limits Act in 1996. That initiative said that Nevada representatives are subject to term limits of no more than six two-year terms, or a total of twelve years.

The first year that the term limits enacted in 1996 impacted the ability of incumbents to run for office is in 2010.

Vacancies

If there is a vacancy in the assembly, then the Board of County Commissioners in the county representing the seat must decide on a replacement. The Board of County Commissioners must select a person from the same political party that last held the seat when making its decision. If the vacancy happens before the next legislative session and an election for county officers is scheduled, no replacement is named.

Elections for the office of Nevada State Assembly will take place in 2020. The general election will be held on November 3, 2020. A primary is scheduled for June 9, 2020. The filing deadline is March 13, 2020.

2016

Elections for the Nevada State Assembly took place in 2016. The primary election took place on June 14, 2016, and the general election was held on November 8, 2016. The candidate filing deadline was March 18, 2016. Incumbent Victoria Seaman (R) did not seek re-election.

2014

Elections for the Nevada State Assembly took place in 2014. A primary election took place on June 10, 2014. The general election was held on November 4, 2014. The signature filing deadline for candidates wishing to run in this election was March 14, 2014. Victoria Seaman ran unopposed in the Republican primary, while Meghan Smith defeated Gary Fisher, Fayyaz Raja and Sanje Sedera in the Democratic primary. Smith was disqualified from the ballot on October 16, 2014, after it was determined that she did not reside in the district for 30 days prior to her declaration of candidacy. Because of the late date of the court order, Smith remained on the ballot. Seaman defeated Smith in the general election.

Elections for the office of Nevada State Assembly consisted of a primary election on June 12, 2012, and a general election on November 6, 2012. The signature-filing deadline for candidates wishing to run in this election was March 16, 2012. Incumbent William Horne (D) defeated Clark Harrington (R) in the general election. Horne defeated Steven A. Maczka in the Democratic primary and Harrington was unopposed in the Republican primary.
