Wisconsin's forty-second state assembly district is represented by Republican Representative Jon Plumer, who won a special election to replace Rep. Keith Ripp (R) on June 12, 2018.
Members of the Wisconsin State Assembly represent an average of 57,444 residents. After the 2000 Census, each member represented 54,179 residents.
Members of the Wisconsin State Assembly serve two-year terms and are not subject to term limits. Wisconsin legislators assume office the first Monday in January following the election.
Section 6 of Article 4 of the Wisconsin Constitution states, "No person shall be eligible to the legislature who shall not have resided one year within the state, and be a qualified elector in the district which he may be chosen to represent."

A special election for the position of Wisconsin State Assembly District 42 was held on June 12, 2018. The filing deadline for this election was April 17, 2018. A primary election was held on May 15, 2018.
The seat became vacant following Keith Ripp's (R) resignation on December 29, 2017, to serve as an assistant deputy secretary with the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade, and Consumer Protection.
In the Republican primary, Jon Plumer defeated Colleen Locke-Murphy, Darren Schroeder, and Spencer Zimmerman. Plumer defeated Democratic candidate Ann Groves Lloyd and independent candidate Gene Rubinstein in the general election.
