Psaki: Biden’s Mass with congressional leaders ‘the beginning of a path forward’ towards unity
January 20, 2021Incoming White House press secretary Jen Psaki said Wednesday it was personally important to President-elect Joe Biden that a bipartisan delegation of congressional leaders join him at church on Inauguration Day morning.
Psaki said Biden hopes it will signal “the beginning of a path forward” to national healing and political unity at the outset of his term.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell , Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy are all expected to attend Mass with Biden at the Cathedral of St. Matthew the Apostle in Washington ahead of his swearing-in at noon.
Incoming first lady Jill Biden, Vice President-elect Kamala Harris and incoming second gentleman Douglas Emhoff will also attend.
In an interview Wednesday morning on CNN, Psaki said Biden understood that he was “about to take the oath of office to govern not just for the people who elected him, but the people who didn’t vote for him — the people who have opposed him and may continue to oppose him now.”
“His belief is that as a leader, you have to extend a hand. You have to lead by example,” Psaki said. “And it felt important to him personally to have members of both parties with him this morning, and to use that as an example to the American public about ways that we can all come together. And he’s hopeful it will be the beginning of a path forward.”
President Donald Trump will not be joining Biden and congressional leaders for church, nor will he attend the inauguration on the West front of the Capitol.
Instead, the president is expected to depart the White House this morning for a ceremonial send-off at Joint Base Andrews, after which he will travel to his private Mar-a-Lago club in Florida to begin his post-presidential life.
Psaki told CNN it was unlikely the president-elect would mention the outgoing president in his inaugural address later Wednesday, saying Biden’s speech “is definitely not a speech about Donald Trump. I wouldn’t expect to hear about him in the speech today.”
“This is a forward-looking speech, and it’s less about any elected official or former elected official than it is about the American people,” Psaki said. “So he’s going to talk about the problems we’re facing, the resolve of the public to come together, the power of coming together and unifying. And that’s really the message that will be central to his inaugural address.”
