Priority Issues:

I'm a fiscal conservative with socially progressive values. I have the record of proven independence to stand up to the powerful special interests that dominate the State Legislature. I believe that state government needs to live within its means, curb pension abuse and make tax dollars work harder and hold the line on new taxes.

I am a small business leader who believes the best way to ensure budget stability is to create jobs and grow our economy. I support a ban on transit strikes. I want to break the link between legislating and campaign donations, demanding an end to secret promises made through candidate questionnaires.

As a lifelong environmental advocate, I am proud to have been recognized by the Trust for Public Land and Save the Bay for my environmental leadership. I believe we must protect open space and our environmental resources for future generations.

I have organized campaigns to fund homeless shelters, affordable housing and residences for abused women and foster children.

I am strongly pro-choice, support marriage equality and equal pay for equal work.

In my eleven year record of public service I have worked with the community to improve schools and libraries, protect open space, repair crumbling infrastructures to increase public safety, all while maintaining fiscal accountability.

Given my level of knowledge, I don't feel comfortable declaring that one way or the other is most fair and just. We need our immigrant community to be comfortable reporting crimes and serving as witnesses in solving crimes without fear of deportation. Government regulations can have many important health and safety benefits. However, we should continue to examine ways to reduce unnecessary regulations that create a burden and cost on business with little benefit. Expanding access to unemployment benefits and assistance to homeowners facing foreclosure should be examined in light of the economic circumstances and priorities within the state budget. Criminal convictions are a matter of public record.

The tenure process should be examined to ensure it is best serving the teachers and students. Undocumented immigrants who excel in our K-12 schools over a reasonable period of time and who meet the eligibility requirements for college should be allowed access to this key economic opportunity ladder.
