San Antonio Express News - To Fix Democracy, Participate In It

Feb. 12, 2016

By Susan Narvaiz I'm a true believer that when people come together to accomplish a task with an open mind and a heart to serve, a sensible solution can be achieved. Unfortunately, the political dysfunction in Washington has impeded the wheels of progress for far too long. According to an astounding recent Pew Research Center study, only "19% of Americans trust the government". Fortunately for us we have an opportunity to change this stigma in 2016 by electing leaders who are truly invested in their communities and to encourage civil debate on our nations' most polarizing issues. In the same Pew Research Center study "74% of Americans believe that most elected officials put their own interests ahead of the country's." What does this mean? Well, the time has come for all citizens to work together to get our government back on track. Together we can move forward. Whether it's doing your civic duty and voting, running for local office, or volunteering at a local non-profit, we must cherish the value of our citizenship in the greatest nation in the world. We must set the precedent for generations to come that involvement in the community is the cornerstone of effective political function. Our nation is at a crossroads and our resolution for America should be one that produces a spark reignite the values that make our country great. We should resolve to rekindle our American culture to inspire one another to be actively involved in our communities rather than turn away because of negativity and distrust. We have entered a heated election cycle where candidates will seek out the support of the people in which they represent or would potentially represent. We the people have held a back seat to those career politicians who consistently put their interests before the interests of their own communities. It is now our responsibility to rectify this by holding them accountable when we visit the polls. It is never too late to make it your resolution to get active in your community and stand willing to repair our broken political system by working together to once again become the shining city upon the hill.
