Tech firm behind broken Iowa app apologizes
February 4, 2020
The app maker at the heart of reporting issues in the Iowa caucuses has issued an apology and vowed to "apply lessons learned in the future."
"We sincerely regret the delay in the reporting of the results of last night’s Iowa caucuses and the uncertainty it has caused to the candidates, their campaigns, and Democratic caucus-goers," Democratic tech firm Shadow wrote on Twitter today, admitting for the first time the app was the company's creation.
"As the Iowa Democratic Party has confirmed, the underlying data and collection process via Shadow’s mobile caucus app was sound and accurate, but our process to transmit that caucus results data generated via the app to the [Iowa Democratic Party] was not," according to the company, adding the "issue did not affect the underlying caucus results data."
The D.C.-based outfit received more than $63,000 from the Iowa Democratic Party in November and December, a Democratic technology consultant confirmed to POLITICO.
Earlier on Tuesday, a party spokesperson said a "coding issue" was to blame for the technical woes.
Shadow had remained silent as Democratic officials scrambled to sort out the mess caused by the app that was developed with the goal of reporting caucus results quicker and certify the results. "We will apply the lessons learned in the future, and have already corrected the underlying technology issue," the firm promised.
