Travel group pushes guidelines for reopening tourism businesses
The U.S. Travel Association on Monday unveiled new guidelines for reopening the travel industry, which has been devastated by the coronavirus pandemic.
The association’s “Travel in the New Normal,” which was developed with input by medical experts, is a layered approach designed to make consumers feel safe and confident traveling again when the industry fully reopens.
“We’re not going to encourage people to travel until we know it’s safe to travel,” U.S. Travel CEO Roger Dow said on a call with reporters on Monday.
The guidance includes encouraging companies to modify employee practices and redesign high-traffic public spaces, adopt touchless solutions to ticketing, check-in and identification, enhance sanitation efforts, and implement health screening for employees.
It does not mandate the association’s member companies adopt these regulations and doesn’t specify when industries should reopen. Carnival Cruise announced on Monday that it plans to sail some of its ships in North America starting Aug. 1.
“I think it has to happen by each industry,” Dow said, adding that it’s up to companies when they’ll reopen.
Major U.S. airlines, including American Airlines and JetBlue, are requiring passengers to wear masks on flights and taking other precautions such as limiting available seats and handing out sanitizing wipes.
“The most important thing for travel is that we start out safely,” Dow said in response to those measures. “Let’s start safely, even if we start a little bit slowly.”
Dow said the association predicts that domestic, leisure travel will return first, followed by business travel and international travel.
Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said Monday it's too early to say when pre-coronavirus international travel will resume for the airline industry. He added that more assistance could be needed for the travel industry.
“The president’s also looking about ways to stimulate travel,” Mnuchin said during an appearance on Fox Business Network. “We want people to travel safely, to be able to visit places safely.”
Dow also indicated his support for states safely reopening beaches. He was responding to a question about the association's stance on the issue, particularly in light of reports of hundreds of people swarming the beaches in Florida since Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) announced they can open at local leaders’ discretion.
“So far, everything I’ve seen about Florida is looking very positive,” he said. “It’s been always said that vitamin D and sunshine are one of the best things for health.”
He said that during the Spanish flu pandemic, people used the sunshine “as one of the therapies.”
