Trump Rips California Democrats For Rolling Blackouts During Heatwave
August 18, 2020Rolling Blackouts aren't as common as they were decades ago thanks to upgraded power grids and intelligently-sourced energy. However, Californians are telling a different story this week. In the midst of a summer heat-wave, hundreds of thousands of Californians are finding themselves in and out of the dark as engineers and state officials scramble to identify the problem.
Parts of the state are supposed to get into the triple digits over the next week or so, putting pressure on the state to figure out why and make corrections. President Trump took the opportunity to blast California's intensely liberal state government on Twitter:
"In California, Democrats have intentionally implemented rolling blackouts — forcing Americans in the dark. Democrats are unable to keep up with energy demand...
...Meanwhile, I gave America energy independence in fact, so much energy we could never use it all. The Bernie/Biden/AOC Green New Deal plan would take California’s failed policies to every American!"
Is it possible that these blackouts were intentionally caused?
Even though the situation seems to be the fault of poor management within the states's infrastructure, The New York Times covered the story, speaking with California's ISO.
The energy experts noted that the peak electricity use over the weekend fell below peaks in other years, when utilities were able to handle the demand. They also said the operating reserves of power available to the utilities were higher than the 3 percent level where California ISO has traditionally ordered a reduction in electricity use.
The first rolling blackouts this time occurred on Friday, as temperatures reached 10 to 20 degrees above normal in California and other parts of the West. At 6:36 p.m., California ISO ordered its “Stage 3” action, where the utilities that are part of its electric grid network — primarily California’s three investor-owned power providers, Pacific Gas & Electric, Southern California Edison and San Diego Gas & Electric — cut power to some customers.
On Saturday, as temperatures returned to triple digits, the grid operator again began its emergency procedures.
Experts seem to agree that the state is outfitted with enough power to avoid this type of situation, but the President is never one to shy away from the possibility of malicious intent by democratic leaders. Perhaps when the President says "intentionally", he means that the state has not done enough to rectify the issue - which is evident.
Writers at Politico wasted no time in taking a shot back at the President:
California ultimately did not experience blackouts on Monday after the state’s power grid operator initially warned residents that it expected to implement outages to reduce pressure on the electric grid.
The president has long criticized Democratic leaders in California for their stewardship of the state, singling out forest management efforts that he has labeled lackluster.
But Trump’s comments on California’s affairs have drawn skepticism from on-the-ground officials and the scientific community.
It's no secret that California representatives, including Vice Presidential Nominee, Kamala Harris, have done just about everything they can to make California a tough state to live in - leading the nation in both state debt and homelessness. And now, as hundreds of thousands of Californians are fleeing the state in search of greener pastures, power-grid failures are now on the menu.
With everything going on this week between Corona Virus lockdowns and the DNC National Convention, it's very possible that pure negligence is the culprit of California's epic failures. Hopefully this isn't an example of what is to come for the whole country in a Biden-Harris Presidency.
