The seat became vacant on February 7, 2017, when Brian Banks (D) resigned after pleading guilty to a misdemeanor that involved falsifying financial information in order to apply for a loan.

Tenisha Yancey defeated Sandra Bucciero, Ronald Diebel, John Donahue, Burgess Foster, Kirkland Garey, Keith Hollowell, Justin Johnson, Gowana Mancill Jr., Pamela Sossi, and Washington Youson in the Democratic primary.
